“It goes without saying that there are a lot of reservations in the Congress about the war in Afghanistan and our level of commitment,” Gates said. “There are concerns among the American people who are tired of a decade of war."

Again, that doesn't say what you think it does. Sorry, but you're reading into what is not actually stated.

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Not what I said, but do you believe any candidate for any office always tells the complete truth? Really?

no...i believe not a one of them speaks the truth. it was you all who bought this particular man's campaign slogans
of "hope and change" and "yes we can", with visions of honesty, transparency, magical fairies and unicorns.

You seem to believe you know a lot about me. That said, no, I only thought he was a better choice than McCain, who destroyed his former self to run, and chose a VP candidate poorly.

US troops coming home? Obama to say on Wednesday - Yahoo! News

So what will he do?
- Insignificant drawdown so he doesn't break his promise? (say, 1-2,000 troops come home)
- Relatively significant start of a drawdown? (5-10,000)
- Huge withdrawal? (20,000 or more)
What SHOULD he do?

I tend to think it'll be somewhere mid-range, which seems about right to me.

Only Guard units will be "coming home". Everyone else will simply be re-deployed somewhere else.

oh, absolutely

DOMESTIC CONCERNS aren't about politics at all

i mean, not necessarily

LOL!

Domestic concerns are those that concern us domestically. This means any issue we have on the homefront is a domestic concern.

i know, i know

gates is talking about THE BUDGET

LOL!

meanwhile, today:

A record-high number of Americans want to bring American troops home from Afghanistan, according to a new poll Tuesday that found that sentiment growing among Democrats, Republicans and independents.

A Pew Research Center poll released Tuesday shows that 56 percent of those surveyed would like to see a drawdown happen as soon as possible - an increase of eight percentage points since Pew’s previous survey a month ago.

A year ago, just 40 percent of those surveyed wanted to see a rapid drawdown. In September 2008, 33 percent of Americans wanted all U.S. troops to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, support has subsided for keeping troops in Afghanistan until the situation is more stable. Of those surveyed, 39 percent said they want troops to stay put, down from 53 percent a year ago and 61 percent in the fall of 2008.

Two-thirds of Democrats support the withdrawal of troops, while 57 percent of independents said the same — both increases from earlier points in the war. Even among Republicans, backing for a withdrawal has grown, with 43 percent in favor, compared with 31 percent a year ago.

Now that is what you have to support. That there is nothing else. I'll wait. :coffeepap

The time table speaks for itself especially since it goes against what the Generals say

No, it doesn't. That is merely your spin. You need actual evidence to support it.

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

So Truman did it to win an election?

Actually Truman did it for the same reasons Obama is doing it.

Domestic concerns are those that concern us domestically. This means any issue we have on the homefront is a domestic concern.

Gates was talking about the domestic views of the war. I do not see it as that bad since we have seen very few war protests.

I don't beleive that is all he is talkng about. There are domestic issues that effect what we can do. But be sure, we're tired of war. Both parties are tired as well. Even republicans are calling for our troops to come home. Staying with wars that should never have been started in the first place is not sound.

Rebuplicans do not want it done for an election. They want to follow the advice of the Generals that Obama is ignoring.

Those opposed to this, your playing politics... Nothing more.

A: what is victory

B: how much longer is it going to take... 5 years? A decade?

C: how many more lives are you willing to lose?

Are you willing to pull out and let the Taliban take over again? That would mean 1500+ soldiers died for no reason.

Unless you're going to answer my questions, don't come to the party.

Victory is defeating the Taliban and setting up a government that can defend itself against the terrorists

As long as it takes.

Why would you ask that? Look at WW2

What about WW2?

How are they in any way comparable...

The afghan war has lasted almost twice as long as WW2...

According to the President, it's this...

"Our overarching goal remains the same: to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and to prevent its capacity to threaten America and our allies in the future. To meet that goal, we will pursue the following objectives within Afghanistan. We must deny al Qaeda a safe haven. We must reverse the Taliban's momentum and deny it the ability to overthrow the government. And we must strengthen the capacity of Afghanistan's security forces and government, so that they can take lead responsibility for Afghanistan's future."

If these have been accomplished, then we should pack up and get out. If not, then we either stay until they are, or change the goals, then pack up and get out.

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

I think this is a very foolish idea. You should withdrawal troops as the situation lessens. Not for politics sake. Having planned withdrawals only tells the enemy when they should attack or make movements. If the situation in Afghanistan has improved to where less troops are needed then that's fine. But placing a timeline down and removing troops (which may put the ones currently there in more harm) is an extremely unwise and foolish decision, especially if it's motivated by politics and approval ratings.

Yes and there is no where near the deaths.

Now answer my question

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Please oh please come home...
No reason we need to be in Afghanistan...
