US troops coming home? Obama to say on Wednesday

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

More like telling the enemy at what point to expect large troop movements and post abandonments.
The whole point of announcing a withdrawal is to put pressure on the Afghans so that when it comes time to withdraw, they would have pulled up the slack and prepared for our withdrawal in which case the enemy would see no drop in force strength. It's the Afghans country, if they don't want to improve security, then ultimately it will impact their country and they will feel the results and demand more security. And besides we got Bin Laden, Al Queda is in Pakistan living in mansions anyways.

US troops coming home? Obama to say on Wednesday - Yahoo! News

So what will he do?
- Insignificant drawdown so he doesn't break his promise? (say, 1-2,000 troops come home)
- Relatively significant start of a drawdown? (5-10,000)
- Huge withdrawal? (20,000 or more)
What SHOULD he do?

I tend to think it'll be somewhere mid-range, which seems about right to me.

He should make sure that the time is right for an actual drawdown, so as to insure that we won't be back in 10 years to start all over again, for the third time.

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Marl my words this is a mistake Obama will live to regrei.

****ing A! All the troops out of Afghanistan is the only answer. Anything else is piddling and disingenuous.

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Such bull**** partisanship.

I can only imagine what you'd say if Obama did, indeed, decide not to tell us what the Afghanistan strategy was:
"I thought this president stood for transparency! Change you can believe in! He owes it to the American taxpayers who are funding this 10-year-old war, who don't even want to be there anymore, to tell us what our strategy is there!"

You're just going to take a dump on anything Obama decides to do. He promised to eventually get us out of Afghanistan in time; that's exactly what he's doing, and he's not keeping us in the dark about it. It's funny to see the right so confused about what their stance on Afghanistan should be...is it necessary to stay the course or do we need to get out? The answer: the opposite of whatever Obama chooses.

Obama is not listening to the military

Barack Obama and Pentagon split on Afghanistan pullout | World news | The Guardian

Barack Obama is set to reject the advice of the Pentagon by announcing on Wednesday night the withdrawal of up to 30,000 troops from Afghanistan by November next year, in time for the US presidential election.

The move comes despite warnings from his military commanders that recent security gains are fragile. They have been urging him to keep troop numbers high until 2013.

I think it is a great move to pull out 33,000 by 2013. He has promised to pretty much do more by 2014 hasn't he? Besides the fact that much of the American enemy is not in Afghanistan anymore and -just in case- we need to be ready for something like Pakistan or god forbid Iran, this is a great move. Now we need to draw back from Libya, quit giving the Pakistanis money, and like the mayors want concentrate more of that on US soil.

The Pentagon always wants more troops and wants to fight it out. It may not always be the best policy, but they always want more firepower and think that a straightforward, more power approach is best usually. But this will also result in more service member casualties and won't put pressure on the Afghans for them to take the lead.

It makes no sense to say we can pull that many out in 2 years when you do not know how the state of the fight will be going. This is a political speech and Obama is not listening to his Generals

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Obamas stuck between a rock and a hard place.

He's ****ed if he does.

He's ****ed if he doesn't.

If he does do it, there's a possibility that Afghanistan could worsen. Then again, Afghanistan has been a pitfall of the Soviet Union and the British empire. It's truly difficult to say what "winning" is. But as far as holding up this weak, corrupt and ineffective regime in Kabul... it seems to be failing in this regard. But then again, thats what happens when you think you can go to a country that hasnt had a democratic/stable government in decades, with no infrastructure or educated population, and think democracy can magically kick in. I shall demonstrate.

If he doesn't do it, he'll be accused of breaking his promises, and I won't hear the ****ing end of it from the far righties saying we're not outraged enough or some ****.

That's the word, I stick to it.

Jetboogieman.

Actually his generals suggested cuts and they all had agreed some kind of timetable was needed, even Bush said this towards the end of his presidency. The fact of the matter is as we turn over operations to Afghanistan, the American military has other matters to focus on, and tax dollars can be used better elsewhere.

Danger Will Robinson! Opinion! Danger!

Every single thing this man does (perhaps even including breathing oxygen, which as we all know is Marxist in nature because every human upon the planet has free access to it, except perhaps inhabitants of Los Angeles :2razz:) is a mistake to you.

So excuse me for not taking you seriously on this one.

Withdrawal without total victory over Al Qaeda and the Taliban opens the Country up to a return to the type of repressive society that was there prior to our presents there.

This is not just because Obama is a worthless amateur, it would be true if Reagan was still in office.

Once again for the record I don't hate Obama, just what he does and what he stands for which I don't see as America or our interests.

As a person I wish him well in private life.

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

where is the military advantage to tonite's announcement of exactly how many united states troops (seventy thousand) obama hopes and wishes are still gonna be in afghanistan on ELECTION DAY, twenty twelve?

the president's political purpose, in contrast, is plain

Barack Obama is set to reject the advice of the Pentagon by announcing on Wednesday night the withdrawal of up to 30,000 troops from Afghanistan by November next year, in time for the US presidential election.

The accelerated drawdown will dismay American and British commanders in Kabul, who have privately expressed concern that the White House is now being driven by political rather than military imperatives.

Obama's decision is aimed at placating an American public tired of a 10-year war that has cost 1,522 US lives. The killing of Osama bin Laden added impetus to calls to pull out.

Nato commanders led by General David Petraeus have set out the risks of withdrawing too many troops too soon, and warned Obama there has been no noticeable dividend from the death of the al-Qaida leader. They had urged him to keep in place the bulk of the extra 30,000 troops he committed to the "surge" until the end of 2012, so a drawdown can begin in 2013. That would give the military another full "fighting season" to attack Taliban strongholds and target insurgent leaders.

This year's fighting season, which is now underway, has shown that the Taliban is still strong, despite the pounding given to them over the winter by ISAF forces. In the first week of June, there were 701 security incidents across Afghanistan.

The withdrawal has created deep divisions in Washington. The defence secretary, Robert Gates, argued for a modest reduction – at one point as low as 2,000 – citing the advice of US commanders in Afghanistan that they need to protect gains made during the winter against the Taliban.

But senior White House staff, conscious that the president has an election to fight next year, argued in favour of a reduction that would send a signal to the US public that an end to the war is in sight.

The Associated Press reported that Obama could announce 10,000 troops to be brought home by the end of the year, and a further 20,000 next year – all of the 30,000 extra troops he ordered to Afghanistan as part of the "surge" in 2009. That would still leave about 70,000 troops, with all combat troops scheduled to leave by 2014, provided that Afghan forces are ready to take over.

Gates, who, along with secretary of state Hillary Clinton, was scheduled to meet Obama at the White House to finalise the details, acknowledged on Tuesday that US political considerations as well as conditions on the ground in Afghanistan contributed to the decision.

He said the war's unpopularity in the US and with Congress had to play a significant part in the president's thinking.

Troops may be able to be pulled but it is disingenuous to put a number out 2 years in advance. I could be more earlier or it could take longer before we can pull out troops.

This is in my opinion a campaign political stunt.

Obama is clearly ignoring what the generals are saying for political gain

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Concerns in Congress and that Americans are “tired of a decade of war” are swaying President Barack Obama’s decisions about the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday as the president prepares to announce his plans on Wednesday.

Speaking with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the State Department ahead of a White House meeting on Afghan strategy, Gates said that the war’s rising unpopularity among Americans and members of Congress has played a significant role in the president’s thinking about the role of U.S. troops there, The Associated Press reported.

“It goes without saying that there are a lot of reservations in the Congress about the war in Afghanistan and our level of commitment,” Gates said. “There are concerns among the American people who are tired of a decade of war."

Yes, Obama once again took the middle ground.

Remember back in late 2009? McChrystal was calling for 40,000 troops, and when Obama committed 30,000 instead, people like Sean Hannity cried "He's not even listening to our men in uniform!! He's not giving them the resources they need!" And yet now, a year and a half later, the consensus seems to be that the 30,000-troop surge has been a success. We've killed more and more top al Qaeda operatives (including, you know, ****ing bin Laden), we've upped drone strikes even more, and substantial overall improvement has occurred since President Obama's decision in late 2009. So this idea that the president MUST do exactly what the military is calling for has already been proven false. Chances are, the numbers from Petraeus were simply smart bargaining; they knew Obama favored a drawdown this summer, so the smaller the number they recommended to him, the smaller the number of his eventual choice, even if it wouldn't exactly match their request.

No Obama took the road that he thinks will help him in November of 2012

You do realize that if you read Gates comments honestly, it would not support the claim made. I wonder which way you'll go? :coffeepap
