Downtown Vancouver rocked by Stanley Cup post-game riot

VANCOUVER -- Angry Canucks fans are on a rampage, smashing windows, looting and torching cars and dumpsters on the streets of downtown Vancouver.

More than three hours after the Stanley Cup final loss, police are moving up Howe St. toward the crowd massed at the Chapters book store on Howe and Robson.

They are very gradually pushing the crowd North up Howe.

Police spokeswoman Jana McGuiness warned earlier that police are about to escalate their response.

She said they will be igniting flash-bangs, which make loud noises and spray.

"What we're doing right now is bringing in hundreds of police officers."

The message is, you need to leave."

Yes, I'm going to make this political. What is it with blue cities and liberal bastions rioting immediately after championship games? And usually, it's the winning team that riots, which is odder even.

And yes, it does seem to follow certain cities with particularly pent-up angst. And they tend to be among the bluest out there.

I watched that live for an hour or so last night... What do you mean by bluest?

I think it's ridiculous, but seeing how the police handled a random riot, I don't see them doing very well when the apocalypse hit.

That and the interview with the chief of police in Vancouver, he must have said "we want people to be safe and get home" like 20 times in the 5 mins he was talking...

Liberal bastion?

Jesus ****.

Any more Retarded bull**** you got in there?

Liberal has nothing to do with it, it was drunken, asshole guys who wanted to cause trouble, liberal has NOTHING to do with it.

No matter how hard they try, the Canadiens will never upstage Los Angeles. That city riots when they WIN!

What else are we going to do when we aren't aborting babies, doing heroin, and waging war on Christmas?

Then why does this always seem to happen in LA, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, DC.....?

Didn't happen in Dallas or San Antonio. Not Pittsburgh, which does have a strong conservative contingent mixed in. Same for Indianapolis, St. Louis, Tampa, ......

Every city has ther hanful of thugs that take the risk of wreaking havoc when "opportunity" arises. It have nothing--I mean nothing--to do with lean.
I can't believe someone is asinine enough to make this political. Jeepers.

Apparently, flipping over cars, setting them on fire, and grabbing some TVs out of the storefront window is quite the way to celebrate an NBA championship or whatnot for you guys.

Do you even know what sport the Stanley Cup is?

Yes, but I guess you can't fill in the blanks, so I'll do it for you.

I can't see Canadians getting worked up over the Toronto Raptors, the only NBA team they have.

These types of occurrences happen in the U.S. usually over NBA championships first and foremost.

In Canada, it's reserved for hockey, which is like oxygen to them.

Hm were having a parade today in Dallas for the mavs. I wonder how it will turn out?

With 100 degree heat and 250,000 people, there will be some incidents, but they won't be based on the "thrill" of the championship.

And it's my observation that Stevie Wonder sees better than you.

Apparently you slept through the G20 summit meetings and the recurring shenanigans of Berkley students. You didn't see how Wisconsin teachers destroyed government property during the recent union clashes with the governor.

And you don't want to SEE that these sports-related incidents happen in the most liberal bastions of American.....and now Canada.

I am really ticked off at the small number of people in Vancouver who have ruined the story of this series. It was an incredible series with two teams slugging out for seven games. So many incredible stories and so much intensity, especially considering the teams only play once a year in the regular season.

I used to have a lot of respect for Vancouver, but the way their fans and players have behaved in this series really have me re-thinking that. It isn't only because they are distracting from the story of Timmy Thomas and the incredible work ethic of the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship run, but it puts a black mark on the great sport of hockey after a series that was far better than it's NBA counterpart.

I am elated that the Bruins are the Stanley Cup champs and that Boston has the most championships of any city this century in ALL FOUR sports, but Vancouver has put a little bit of a mar on that... Shame, shame, shame...

I believe its time to treat these losers like the losers they are. Uzi their ass and the ones left standing should pay 100% for clean up. Be banned for life from all sports games.

I have never been able to figure out how people could get so wrapped up in a team that they could go out of control and join a mob.

I seem to have moved to Cities where a professional team wins it all or had just won it all starting in 1972 it was Dallas, the year after the Cowboys won the Super Bowl and if you were from say California and bad mouthed the Cowboys you were going to be in a fight in seconds.

I was in Portland in 1977 when the Trail Blazers won the NBA title and their was bedlam in down town Portland and they won.

.In late 1977 I moved to the Bay area the Raiders they had won the NFL title the year before were the focus of a bunch of gang types and they caused trouble on a regular basis.

I was still in the Bay Area when a team I was a fan of finally won the Super Bowl. I was a big fan of Joe Montana before it was cool and in 1981 & 84 they won it all and don't remember any problems.

I think that people who get involved in riots are week minded people who have serious mental problems and have no close relationships with other real people outside of the sports team.

Opening Day of the Baseball season this year a man was beaten by gang bangers so badly he is still in a Coma to this day. All he did was wear a San Francisco Jersey to a Dodger Game.

I don't think this guy will ever wake up.

I believe that it will take the police opening fire on people in one of these riots before they will come to an end. Rioters cost millions in property damage and often get into looting and it ends when a store is empty.

They acted the fool last November.

It's dumb to try to turn this into a political thing. But you're supposed to riot when your team wins, not loses. When the Cubs win the World Series, I'm gonna loot to my heart's content.

Well let's be honest. The series was theirs to win. You are up 2-0 and end up losing 4-3. That is pretty painful. And funny guy making jokes about the Cubs winning the World Series.

They're liberal alright. And here is the undeniable, irrefutable, no doubt whatsoever, godless, shameless, liberal proof:
