WASHINGTON – Amid increasing calls for Rep. Anthony Weiner to resign, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says the decision should be up to the congressman and his New York constituents.
The former speaker said in San Francisco that she believes the decision should be made by "the individual member" and the people in his district.
Weiner, a seven-term Democrat, has admitted sending sexually explicit photos and messages over the Internet to a half dozen women over the past three years. Pelosi has asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate whether Weiner used any government resources.
Is there any question, any question whatsoever, that Pelosi is a hypocrite?

Unlike you right?

John Ensigh, Vitter, Ney... shall we go on in your never ending partisan bickering about the opposition? How about cleaning house first before bitching about the democrats?

This is to be expected...she wouldnt call for rangels resignation either....pelosi is as partisan as it gets in congress

"American" is the leader of the GOP party in the House"?

Pelosi hasn't seen a weiner since she crawled out of one. She's probably thankful.

Have I protected them, or said they shouldn't go?

Hmmm... well technically she would be a hypocrite if she called for the resignations of other democrats but not this one. If she has left it up to them each time, then she is pretty uniform in her approach.

Also, Weiner didn't break the law, he just did something embarrassing. Considering that, if his constituents don't like him they can have him recalled or simply vote him out at the next election. That is what due process would look like.

You cite instances considered to be more traditional relationships between men and women (Ensign and Vitter). Basically affairs, and violations of the marriage covenent.

Ney does not belong in this comparison, as he was caught up in Abramoff corruption, but if you need a comparison, see Cold-Cash Jeffersen, D-Louisiana.

With such as Weiner ........... and Foley (R-FL) and Lee (R-NY) we have not affairs, but behavior better described as indirect and random suggestions of sexual daliances with strangers. Many see such as more a more deviant type of behavior. Call it what you will, but it is certainly non-traditional. Where we can compare apples to apples, such as Weiner to Lee and Foley, the Republicans have resigned.

However, if I may paraphrase Woodrow Wilson: "Do not murder your political opponent when they are commiting suicide". The longer Weiner hangs around, the more he is as poison to the Democrat Party.

Have you said they should? Show us were you clearly have said that David Vitter, presently sitting in the US house of Congress, should resign now or have resigned due to him screwing prostitutes. How about showing us where you chastised the GOP leadership in Congress that John Ensign should have resigned.. lets say before they backed him for re-election last time around... where he had already admitted screwing around, not to mention was under investigation for the very fraud and what not that ultimately made him resign.

It is one thing to be critical of Pelosi and the Dems for not cleaning up in their own house (which is fully justified) but when you and others on the right refuse to do exactly the same thing for your own dirty laundry... then calling Pelosi a hypocrite is like pot meet kettle.

Wasserman-Schultz just called for his resignation. If a Democrat loses Debbie, they have lost everyone. :)

I dont think she called for Rangel or Jefferson to step down either. Typically, they are focusing on the irrlevant part of this whole situation. That Weiner posted his weiner his irrelevant to me...it is an issue for he and his to deal with. But in all the discussions on the news programs and interviews what has been completely glossed over is that he lied about it and made false accusations of criminal activity to try to cover for his pathetic self.

Im sorry...maybe I missed those stories where they accused someone of a crime by hacking their systems and then specifically targeted an individual in a slanderous attack knowing full well the whole time that they (like Weiner) were in fact the guilty scumbag in question.

This is shaping up just like the Clinton trial. Everyone focused on the Lewinsky 'scandal' while ignoring the fact he was on trial for sexual harassment by sitting on a couch with a towel draped over his dick beating off, then asked a state trooper to escort a campaign worker to his room whereby he stood up, let the towel fall, and asked her to 'kiss it'. Everyone focused on the affair (tho not the fact that the president of the country encouraged an aid to masturbate with one of his cigars, then smoked it kind of a disgusting guy when you really think about it). They focused on a consensual act, not the allegations of rape of one woman and sexual mashing of another on the day of her husbands funeral.

I dont care that weiner sent pics of himself to 6 other women. I care that he lied about it but more so that he accused others of criminal activity while he was trying to cover his own kins and perversion. (BTW...always a nice touch when you send a topless picture of yourself with pictures of your wife in the background). Yeah...I can see why dems want to keep this guy around...

More likely the governor of New York.

The Governor of NY would appoint a replacement. After that, am not sure about NY law for any special elections of Representatives. The appointee may just serve out Weiner's regular term.

I would assume Pelosi sees polling data indicating his continued stay could hurt the party in other states.

The leaders of the Democratic Party abandoned scandal-plagued Rep. Anthony Weiner en masse Saturday after it was revealed that he had communicated online with a 17-year-old Delaware girl, throwing into serious doubt his vow to remain in office.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the party’s top campaign chiefs — Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) — all called on Weiner to resign in statements released within minutes of each other.

Pelosi and Israel only issued their statements after asking Weiner privately to call it quits, and when he refused, they issued their coordinated barrage on Saturday afternoon.

“Congressman Weiner has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents, and the recognition that he needs help,” Pelosi said Saturday. “I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a Member of Congress.”

A day earlier, Pelosi had declined to call for him to resign after inquiries to her office.

Israel and Wasserman Schultz were less generous in their assessment of their colleague.

“Anthony’s inappropriate behavior has become an insurmountable distraction to the House and our work for the American people. With a heavy heart, I call on Anthony to resign,” Israel said.

Calling the scandal a “sordid affair, Wasserman Schultz, who is a surrogate for President Barack Obama in her role as DNC chairman, said “the behavior he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner’s continued service in Congress is untenable.”

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the Budget Committee Chairman and former DCCC chairman, also joined the calls to resign on Saturday. “Anthony Weiner’s repeated violation of the public trust is unacceptable,” Van Hollen said. “He can best advance the issues he fought for by resigning immediately.”

they can't make him quit, but they can and will make his life miserable

it's anthony's move

there will be a special to fill his seat (ny9, parts of brooklyn and queens), til then it will be vacant like shirtless chris lee's

politico's update, an hour later---anthony moves fast:

A defiant Rep. Anthony Weiner will not resign and will instead seek treatment even as a the top leaders of the Democratic Party abandoned him en masse Saturday after it was revealed that he had communicated online with a 17-year-old Delaware girl.

But Weiner has ignored those calls and announced Saturday afternoon that he’s seeking “professional treatment.”

“Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person,” Weiner’s office said in a statement provided to POLITICO. “In light of that, he will request a short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well. Congressman Weiner takes the views of his colleagues very seriously and has determined that he needs this time to get healthy and make the best decision possible for himself, his family and his constituents.”

The 17 year old may be a game changer. Interesting to see how that one plays out.
