German hospitals overwhelmed with E.coli outbreak

BERLIN (AP) -- Hospitals in northern Germany are being overwhelmed as they struggle to provide enough beds and medical care for patients stricken by an outbreak of E. coli, the German health minister admitted Sunday.
"The situation in the hospitals is intense," minister Daniel Bahr told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, adding that clinics outside of Hamburg and northern Germany - the epicenter of the E.coli outbreak - should start taking in ill persons from the north.

Anybody following this? I haven't seen any threads outside Europe.

I feel bad when ever people die needlessly no matter what the reason, but 18 deaths is not a big deal in the scale of the world is nothing.


Fact is there are 73 people killed by lightening strikes every year. So this is media hype, and not a major story.

2,000 people infected by a new lethal organism isn't a major story in your world? How boring.

No surprise when you have third world dirtbags picking your veggies. They dont use toilet paper.

They found now that its not the cucumbers that are tainted, it was bean sprouts that caused the outbreak. Its always scarey when what you eat can make you sick or kill you unsuspectingly

I'm wondering if terrorists and countries with the ability to customize these organisms aren't involved.

Somebody not following procedure is a far likelier cause, even with mechanisation. This advertising blurb pre-dates the German outbreak.

" ... There have been many pathogen outbreaks throughout the world involving sprouts. Several people have died, and over 7,000 have been hospitalized from eating contaminated sprouts. The main problem is that seed coming from a field may have come in contact with animal waste. Animal waste can harbor the dangerous and sometimes lethal bacteria E.coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella, as well as other pathogens. The prefect environment for sprouting is nearly ideal for the growth of pathogens. Each Salmonella cell will grow to about 100,000 cells in 48 hours.

No reasonable method of decontaminating the seed is 100% safe, so there are several steps that need to be taken in order to insure you have safe sprouts.... "
