New Mexico will end a food stamp supplement for elderly and disabled residents, according to the Associated Press. The cuts come just as Congress is considering cuts to the food stamp program even as a record-high amount of people are receiving the benefits.

The AP reports that the Human Services Department will stop the supplement on July 1 because there is no money in the state budget for the program. The program cost half a million dollars last fiscal year.

Federal law requires that those who receive food stamps receive at least $16 a month. New Mexico currently provides at least $25 a month for those who qualify for food stamps.

On a federal level, ABC News reported that Congress is considering spending $2 billion less on food stamps than President Barack Obama says in his version of the budget.

A record number of Americans — about 14 percent — now rely on the federal government’s food stamps program and its rapid expansion in recent years has become a politically explosive topic.More than 44.5 million Americans received SNAP benefits in March, an 11 percent increase from one year ago and nearly 61 percent higher than the same time four years ago.

Well, it's official, New Mexico would rather Rich People get Tax Breaks then elderly people and the poor eat.

My best response to this is that it's is just wrong.

There are people who can get by without buy there are still others who need Food Stamps to survive.

I pray this doesn't spread.

I agree that it's sad to see this. There are so many people that need help right now, with unemployment as high as it is. This is precisely the wrong time to be cutting back on things like food stamps. If they're going to do it at all, they should do it when unemployment is low. :(

Spending money you don't have is the responsible, smart way to run a State, look at California!

The state government doesn't have the money to continue the program. It is a simple, if sad, reality of economics and living within your means...

Wow. This is a shame. Corporations get bailed out, multi-billion dollar wars get waged, the top 1% get tax breaks, and yet we can't even manage to feed our own people. I truly worry for the future of this country.

$500,000 is all that the program costs the State of New Mexico annually. I wonder what the landscaping costs are for the Governor's mansion. Add that to the limo service, swimming pool maintenance, and the costs for the Chef and you will have easily surpassed 1/2M.

The ones with the empty stomachs need to take out the one with the chef.

You know, I have been very vocal about abuse of the Food Stamp program by those who don't want to pull their own weight in society. But Food Stamps are not for the lazy. They are for the children, who are innocent.

Ending this program in New Mexico is wrong on so many levels. But, the budget must be balanced. I propose that we take all the elderly and disabled out to the countryside, dig a big hole, and then shoot them all and bulldoze them into the hole. Problem solved. Budget is now balanced, and we can give the money saved to AT&T, which is a welfare loafer we seem to like. [/sarcasm]

Miss Lovejoy, exactly how does AT&T relates to Arizon'a budget being problematic?

MY GOD WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

once, just once, I wish those who can't support them would think of the children BEFORE they have a half dozen of them.

I see no point in any state giving any assistance if it's meager and non-beneficial.

How much food can be bought and consumed for $15 , $25? That's what they've been getting. . . surely that's not actually enough to live off of already.

Where are the people demanding that they pay *more* than that? Why are people offended that such a small amount is being taken away instead?

I guess abortions should be paid by the government, right?

who said anything about abortions? would it hurt poor people to wear a ****ing condom or take the pill? they hand out condoms for free and you can get the pill at the "free clinic". there is no excuse for these people to keep pumping out kids like litters of kittens and then expecting the productive population to support them.

I don't know, I just presumed that all this talk was about limited the poor from reproducing. ;)

I have a friend who had polio as a child. He uses a wheelchair. Bright guy and likable. He has had to claw his way to meaningful employment all his life. Disabled people are never likely to get the good jobs, if they get any job. They are usually underemployed. Disabled people are often the first to be let go. Usually it is because they have the crap jobs that are the first jobs to go in a cut back. As they downsized two years ago they cut him to half time. No benefits. They cut his hours again. He doesn't want anyone to know but he is now receiving food stamps. He no longer has health insurance. If they cut his food stamps he'll have to eat fewer meals. The state recently agree to set aside half a billion dollars to attract new business by offering corporate welfare.

What is his skill?

funny, I went to HS with a guy who was blind. he somehow managed to get a college degree and a good job. 1st job out of college, I worked with a guy who was deaf. he had a degree in chemistry and a good job. knew another guy with MS, rented a house from my aunt. he had a degree and a good job

what did the 3 of them have in common? they refused to play the pity card and sit back and cry about how unfair it was that they were disabled.

How about personal responsibility? Now there's a novel thought. Why should the government pay for a child's welfare on a routine basis? I thought it was the parent's role.

Never mind the parent. The child is innocent.

so we should just keep encouraging the parents to produce more and more "innocent" children?

better some suffer and/or die now than ALL suffer later

Though it's not happening in New Mexico, that I'm aware of, with all these bills killing Planned Parenthood around the country, the availability of free condoms and "pills" will be reduced, thus increasing the problem.

so what if they're not free. make a freaking choice. give up a pack of smokes or a case of beer each month and you can afford to buy condoms.

I do too, people like you think it's the job of the Government to feed people.
