Armed westerners have been filmed on the front line with rebels near Misrata in the first apparent confirmation that foreign special forces are playing an active role in the Libyan conflict.

A group of six westerners are clearly visible in a report by al-Jazeera from Dafniya, described as the westernmost point of the rebel lines west of the town of Misrata. Five of them were armed and wearing sand-coloured clothes, peaked caps, and cotton Arab scarves.

The sixth, apparently the most senior of the group, was carrying no visible weapon and wore a pink, short-sleeve shirt. He may be an intelligence officer. The group is seen talking to rebels and then quickly leaving on being spotted by the television crew.

So, there's a no-fly zone and boots on the ground... at what point do we get to stop calling it a "humanitarian" mission and call it more accurately : an invasion / an attempted coup d'etat??

6 =/= and army. Advisers have been on the ground before the air strikes. Its an effort to get rid of Gaddifi, no question about it

I think the official rules say that after ten it's considered an invastion on par with the Normandy landing.

The camel apparently got its nose under the tent.

That's a rock and a hard place for a righty tighty. I foresee Republican heads asplodin'

British troops were on 24 hour standby at the start of March, so it's no surprise. Al Jazeera merely reports it as the first evidence of their presence, not in a "shock-horror" mode.

Ya, I was well aware for a long-time that there were boots on the ground... just initially it was called a "conspiracy theory" that this is where things were headed.

Did anyone in NATO besides Obama say 'no boots on the ground'?

Obama said he would close Gitmo and pull out of Afghanistan too.

Here is what I find interesting - I see righties taking al-Jazeera as the gospel truth. But when we were in Iraq, during the Bush administration, they exploded when links to al-Jazeera were posted, and asked why we would believe a slanted organization that sides with terrorists. Councilman put this very succinctly, with his tongue-in-cheek statement. I don't know if anybody else got the humor in what he posted, but I sure did. Nice one, Councilman. LOL.

Seriously, though, al-Jazeera has reported boots on the ground. Are they American boots? That is the question. If they are boots of another nation, which they seem to be, then what does that have to do with Obama?

What I find most heartening in this thread is that some of our most vocal righties have found something other than FOX News to accept as a reliable source, and it is al-Jazeera. Why do they hate our troops?

Anyone who believes anything Obama says is a damn fool. Obama is without any doubt the most worthless piece of trash ever.

I said stay the hell out of there from the start.

He's on par with Bush... Maybe slightly worse in ways.

Really though, if you loves bush you should love Obama... If you love Obama and hated bush, it's only because you thought Bush did not do enough.

I think its stupid that there are laws preventing the assasination of world leaders. Some of the most vile of regimes where toppled with the killing of the dictator.

Every national leader should be free to kill another national leader so long as they are prepared for the consequences of their actions.

Now stop *****ing around with me NATO and just bomb the **** out of every destination that Muammer may be.

No, and I believe that I heard some time ago that the Brits and French were not ruling out sending in forces.

The one thing glaring to me is that we, and when I say we I mean NATO, because that IS the US largely, are doing what most liberal whiners usually carry on about meddling in others affairs and such.

I think we need to get back to a more basic foreign policy. And become more self sufficient as a nation.

What do you think they are trying to do???

I think America should realize that based on precedence, the US is now officially the global bad guy.(at least if we sanction assassinations as a viable tactic)

Do you realize what you are really suggesting? Are you willig to accept assassination of people on our side?

If that happens the nukes would more then likely start flying...

I agree with you on this. There are many problems in the Middle East today because of blowback, where we meddle in the affairs of other nations, and it comes back later to bite us in the ass.

It is a lesson that I am slowly grappling with....As money gets tighter, priorities have to be set.

Do you think international law is STOPPING that from happening? Has it stopped the US from sponsering it in the past, or has it stopped other powers trying to do it to us? Of course not. So what keeps this lovely world of ours spinning and what prevents people from killing each other?

The reprecussions of what would happen if people find out is what. In fact you gave a pretty good reason why yourself.

And Libya is a great example as to why it shouldnt have any particular international law against it, because when the need really arises and the US has to put a miserable bastard down then we wont look like hypocrites.

You mean in lieu of providing enemy combatants legal representation and allowing the judicial system in the U.S. to work? Where have I heard this before?
