Sacramento Bee Deems Mug Shots Racist - California Globe

First, the Los Angeles Times declared that “looting” has racist connotations and prohibited reporters from using it.

Now, the Sacramento Bee, which had already “banned” the word looting from its pages, has decided that mug shots are also racist. So, with limited exceptions, the newspaper won’t use them anymore. Maybe next, both of these publications are going to decide that “crime” is a racist word and shouldn’t be used either.

Is that really so far fetched given what has already gone down so far?

According to an article announcing the new policy the Bee contends that publishing booking “photographs and videos disproportionately harms people of color and those with mental illness, while also perpetuating stereotypes about who commits crime in our community.”

OK. We have officially reached the point at which information is embargoed so as to not make rioters, arsonists, and looters look bad, thus hurting their self esteem and feeling of worth.

They likely noticed that 'people of color' are overrepresented (per their proportion of the general population) as (alleged) perps booked for crime and must avoid having their sensitive readers reminded of that fact.

When will the idiocy reach the point where stick figures are used as "sketches of the suspect" in the case of BIPOC individuals?

They hiding their names as well as their mugshots? I mean when people see Da'Marcus and Shanika got busted what are they going to think?

I'm not sure what to think about this.
Are these pictures of people merely accused of crimes (in which case I suppose you could argue anonymity is a good idea) or are these people convicted?

It's one paper so my normal response is they can do what they like within the law.

Newspeak. In a few more years, it will be 1984.

Pretty much already there brother. They are being doubleplus careful! Just call em all amish youths.

Perhaps, or a hair's breadth away. We all now have a "Covid-19" tracking function loaded on our phones, which supposedly must be voluntarily activated by us. Of course, that last part can probably be changed at the drop of a hat.

I've never liked the idea of the press running mug shots. Even when you smile and wink at the right time, you still look like a convict. Get a Prom pic from my Mom or go with just words.

1. I canceled my subscription to the Los Angeles Times more than a year ago because even its headlines were becoming liberal mini-editorials.

2. So I did not know about its policy of no longer using the word "looters."

a. I did read, however, that some staffers had criticized the emphasis on looting at the expense of reporting on the goals of that "movement."

3. How does the newspaper report looting? Or does it now pretend that there is none?

Stereotypes are over generalizations of what is really true. There is no stereotype of the stupid, lazy Jew. There is no stereotype of the fat Chinese woman on welfare with five illegitimate children by five different men.

Newspapers who think they are contributing to racial harmony by not reporting the race of criminal suspects are deluding themselves.

gotta luv that cancel culture.

This is tiring because the Right has their own versions of doing similar things to protect Trump and we all know it.

Examples? Pick any of the things being touted as Trump accomplishments, for instance...

Let's take The VA Choice Act and VA Accountability Act, expanded VA telehealth services, walk-in-clinics, and same-day urgent primary and mental health care.
This was done at the price of cutting in house VA staff, services, resources and funding. That's in order to make the VA perform worse in house so that the private sector can attack VA services in an effort to privatize the VA altogether.
But more importantly, most if not all of this was well underway during the OBAMA administration so Trump is actually taking credit for an Obama item, yes?

Except Obama never intended to use it to privatize VA, he wasn't cutting from VA budgets to pay for Veterans Choice.

"Trump’s EPA gave $100 million to fix the water infrastructure problem in Flint, Michigan."
The $100 million grant was funded by the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act of 2016, or WIIN, which was signed by President Obama in December 2016.
Although this legislation carried President Obama’s name, the EPA did not officially award the grant to Michigan until March 2017, by which time President Donald Trump was in office. As such, it was technically correct to say that “Trump’s EPA” awarded the grant money, although the funding for that grant was originally provided for under legislation signed by President Obama just before he left office.

"The U.S. is a net natural gas exporter for the first time since 1957."
That's been the case since 2012 actually.
That's what all the fracking is about.

"Under Trump’s leadership, in 2018 the U.S. surpassed Russia and Saudi Arabia to become the world’s largest producer of crude oil."
---IEA, World Energy Outlook, 2012: Energy developments in the United States are profound and their effect will be felt well beyond North America – and the energy sector. The recent rebound in US oil and gas production, driven by upstream technologies that are unlocking light tight oil and shale gas resources, is spurring economic activity – with less expensive gas and electricity prices giving industry a competitive edge – and steadily changing the role of North America in global energy trade. By around 2020, the United States is projected to become the largest global oil producer. …
Great, so he managed not to screw that up and allow it to come to pass.

And you guys are complaining about mug shots in the SacBee?

Are you sure you posted in the right thread? Maybe there were not enough anti-Trump threads out there for you, and you had to turn this one into that. I am not really sure what the point of this post is.

I'm quite sure.

I'm quite sure.

Maybe you can share with those of us outside of leftist looneyville what that post had to do with the OP. You took this thread from mugshots to orange man bad with absolutely no rhyme or reason.

Anyone else confused as to how this figures into charges of leftist bias as counter-examples of media sucking up to protect Trump?

So, are you saying that a news outlet doing something stupid is no big deal because Trump took credit for some things that he should not have? I am still unclear on the connection.

In true trumpian fashion he has to lie about his bigly wins list to make it look less anorexic. And his genuflecting supporters lap it up because taking credit for crap you had little or nothing to do with is fine as long as we stick it to them libs.

Trump is a true genius when it comes to exploiting gullibility. Or perhaps his lack of shame and sociopathy just make him seem like he knows how to exploit it. Genius can be measured in so many ways, nearly all of which are hard to find in him but he sure does does display his lack of shame and sociopathy daily.

So, are you saying that a news outlet doing something stupid is no big deal because Trump took credit for some things that he should not have? I am still unclear on the connection.

I'm pointing out that right wing news media and social media are guilty of the same sensationalism.
American cable news is a profit driven model and if you want impartiality and less bias then chasing profit should be anathema to you and you shouldn't waste energy on all the "enemy of the people/fake news/liberal bias" nonsense.

The news used to be a public service and TV news budgets were loss leaders because OTA broadcast networks kept them afloat with revenue from entertainment. The 24 hour cable news business doesn't have game shows, sitcoms, prime time dramas, cartoons and soaps to fall back on.
Their ONLY product is news, and it has to put asses in seats and glue eyeballs to the screen.

People who accuse ONLY left leaning media of being biased are toadies who drank the Kool-Aid.
Not only is the right doing muc the same, at this time they function as a state controlled propaganda factory.

If you don't get it yet you never will.

Sacramento Bee has always leaned left.

There's a right leaning newspaper that covers the same area but I can't remember the name.

That is my issue it is a mug shot, so they have not convicted. Is there a presumption of guilt? Not sure what to think.
