I have no idea if it can actually get more white-hot stupid than it already is (I suspect somehow it can), but, dang, is the stupid thick these days.

The good news is that my last column in this space is not about “cancel culture.” Well, almost. I agree with some of the critics that it’s a little nuts to say I’ve just been “canceled,” sent into oblivion and exile for some alleged sin. I haven’t. I’m just no longer going to be writing for a magazine that has every right to hire and fire anyone it wants when it comes to the content of what it wants to publish...

What has happened, I think, is relatively simple: A critical mass of the staff and management at New York Magazine and Vox Media no longer want to associate with me...They seem to believe, and this is increasingly the orthodoxy in mainstream media, that any writer not actively committed to critical theory in questions of race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity is actively, physically harming co-workers merely by existing in the same virtual space. Actually attacking, and even mocking, critical theory’s ideas and methods, as I have done continually in this space, is therefore out of sync with the values of Vox Media. That, to the best of my understanding, is why I’m out of here...

...maybe it’s worth pointing out that “conservative” in my case means that I have passionately opposed Donald J. Trump and pioneered marriage equality, that I support legalized drugs, criminal-justice reform, more redistribution of wealth, aggressive action against climate change, police reform, a realist foreign policy, and laws to protect transgender people from discrimination. I was one of the first journalists in established media to come out. I was a major and early supporter of Barack Obama. I intend to vote for Biden in November. It seems to me that if this conservatism is so foul that many of my peers are embarrassed to be working at the same magazine, then I have no idea what version of conservatism could ever be tolerated....

Pro-Tip for the "Cancel Fascists" Crowd: Your inability to differentiate between Evil Wicked Conservative-Nazi Evil-Doers and people like Andrew Sullivan is and will be used as Exhibit A in why your movement should never, ever, ever be allowed to render a judgment of consequence on anyone.

yeesh.

I'm less than convinced that Sullivan, Bari Weiss, et al. really felt compelled to leave due to ideological differences and how that interacts with journalism and political commentary. It's fine to say he's bored/they're bored and want to return to their own platforms. Just own it. It's really old hat--like 1980s old hat--to push the narrative that political correctness is killing conservative commentators in mainstream print journalism or online center/center-left journalism. Over the last month to month and a half, I saw a steady stream of shoehorned pieces about the "trials and tribulations" of being center-to-center-right commentators in journalism.....while the rest of us are in the midst of a pandemic, economic crisis, and justifiable outrage over police conduct. And wouldn't you know it, it led to a bunch of self-branders promoting their soon-to-be-announced platforms (many of whom want donations or paid subscriptions)!

Sullivan can produce some interesting stuff. Like other people, he can also produce duds. That's why I think The Dish was a good outlet for him, even if the output was uneven. It fit him well.

That being said, I find the liberal/progressive/whatever-they-want-to-call-themselves-this-decade hand-wringing over this string of "self-exiles" equally tiring. They've protested way too much and are unwilling to look at how uninteresting or overwrought a lot of left-wing commentary is.

I don't know. Maybe I'm becoming jaded after knowing that there's definitely a Twitter-Journalist-Outlet feedback loop going on, whether you're on the right or the left and the name of the game is self-branding and promotion and one of the best ways to do that is to incidentally find yourself involved in drama.

The woke leftist snobs need to come out of their bubbles or they're in for another shock in November.

I think this thread should be canceled.

If they still needed to persuade people, they wouldn't be acting so completely insane. The obvious (meaning more obvious than before) lunacy is a consequence of the left's hegemonic power.

And yes, it will continue to get worse.

So Sullivan can't handle criticism, is that it? Who is canceling who? Seems to me that the term "cancel culture" is just another way to avoid and dismiss legitimate concerns and criticism and it seems to come from the same people that use demeaning rhetoric to cancel out others opinions. Harper's letter, resignation of elitist journalists....such hypocrisy.

Caveat Emptor.

The spirit and principles of Edward Bernays and Josef Goebbels still drive our Ministry of Truth these days. "We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of."

Blaming liberals is a smart career strategy.

This is fantastic.

Andrew is going to reconstitute The Dish.

Best website ever.

Sullivan goes overboard over certain things a lot- from ‘cancel culture’, to circumcision, to Sarah Palin, and this latest ‘firing’ will just allow him to go to a different platform.
