How Fox News and Right-Wing Media Brainwashed This Dad and Destroyed This Family

This seems to happen to a lot of old people who fall into this dark rabbit hole, they become angry, paranoid, hateful and basically brainwashed by the right-wing media. They hear the lies and conspiracies so much, that they begin to believe all of them as truth.

AM radio has been taken over by "Conservative Christian" stations, there are no normal stations left in my area anyway. The hosts who dare to veer off the Trump train with any truthful news, thoughts or opinions, are swiftly removed from the air and replaced with loyal Trump cult windbags who just spew hate and lies. Old people still like to carry their small AM radios with them for company, and there is no choice but for them to listen to this conspiracy crapola day and night. That's part of Trump's base, gullible and no longer can think for themselves. Pity, really.

Ive seen this fox news effect in my own family, like they will get visibly angry when something negative is said about Trump and they were watching Vindman saying “he looks guilty” and just could not explain why and just got angry when i gave them the most baffled look.

So basically, this lady's father was a moderate liberal who became "conservative" as a result of the country drifting to the left, his kids disowned him because they didn't like that he wasn't liberal enough for them, but when he was really old and frail they convinced him to become a good liberal again.

Do I have that about right?

Not even close to right. He became conservative because he was listening to the crap from conservative media, and that caused him to be angry and hostile to anything not conservative, which is what the rest of the family was against.

You also missed that it was his wife, not his kids who changed things, the person who had to live with him, deal with him. He had a choice about tuning back in as well. He could have changed the channel back to Fox News, ignored the information he was being given.

You seem to be treating the OP as an accurate description of something that happened in the real world, vs the perspective of a person with serious delusions about how the world works. Presumably this is because you share the same delusions.

Back on planet Earth, the general reason why rational people appear to become more conservative as they age, is because of the country’s slide to the left. This phenomenon can happen without the individual actually changing any of their opinions.

Because liberals are generally emotive thinkers, they can’t understand how a person can hold opinions not conforming to those of the herd. Out of this incomprehension comes the familiar trope whereby non-conforming thought is attributed to mysterious bogeyman (e.g. “brainwashing” by right-wing media). This is one of the above-mentioned delusions.

Actually....FOX NEWS is about the only real news available....I'm talking about the actual news portions of their programming which do a good job of showing all sides equally....not the political opinion parts such as Hannity which are not news.

Pretty much all the rest...MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC etc....is all leftist propaganda...all the time!

This is actually how fox news hooks you in then makes you hostile towards anything not conservative. Most of those other channels were also in lockstep with the rally around the flag all during the iraq war, some even firing hosts that were against the war.

You better have a closer look at Trump supporters. They are uneducated trailer trash so stupid that they are easily programmed by the Rush/Sean conspiracy promoters. Trump even said he "loves the uneducated". There are a handful of sophisticated Trumpers. Those are the ones in the upper class that like his tax breaks.

So next time you're at a Trump rally, take note of the 90% of MAGA hat wearers around you and watch them all drool. I've never seen so many beer bellied, tattooed, MAGA idiots in one place.

And no, you wouldn't catch me at a Trump rally. I have noticed all this from the TV.

That maybe almost true. The problem is that 95% of the viewership is there to watch Hannity and his bumbling fools. They don't see anything else.

I believe one of my elderly family members, a near shut-in due to age + medical issues, may be suffering from this phenomenon. While technically still a Democrat (life long!), this individual crossed-over to vote for Trump in 2016. Their day now involves non-stop Fox News, and they can no longer tolerate any discussion even minorly contrary to any Trump-Fox position.

But there's a weird twist to this. This person informed us they will not be voting by mail this time, because voting by mail is "fraudulent & crooked". In fact, ostensibly due to the physical difficulties involved, they will not be voting at the polling place - either. This last is a relief, since this individual has several serious co-morbidities, motivating us to keep them in a relatively quarantined evironment until the virus' danger has passed in our area.

I will admit I find Bret Baeir's Special Report to be pretty good, generally with good panels, and holding to a high level of decorum. I really respect this last (decorum). I try to make it a nightly view.

I also liked Shep Smith, but alas he is no more.

As an aside, I used to like Lou Dobbs when he was on CNN, but now I can't stand his Fox persona.

I don't agree with this, at all. MSNBC is the only real Lefty of the group, with the others being more centered. And all present their news much more factually than say Fox or other R.W. outlets like Sinclair. As to their perceived Left leans, everything seems Left compared the the current hard Right shift in the R.W. media of recent years. At least in my opinion.
