From the "You just can't make this **** up" department....

Washington (CNN) — It's a statement that's as predictable as it is infuriating: President Donald Trump's administration lacks diversity.

On Tuesday, Trump tweeted photos of a briefing he'd received on the new coronavirus spreading out of China.

"We will continue to monitor the ongoing developments," the President said in his post. "We have the best experts anywhere in the world, and they are on top of it 24/7!"

Who are these experts? They're largely the same sorts of white men (and a couple women on the sidelines) who've dominated the Trump administration from the very beginning.

White House task force on coronavirus another example of Trump administration's lack of diversity - CNNPolitics

A disease is spreading all over the world, including the United States and killing people...and CNN's biggest concern is that Trump's task force to fight it isn't diverse enough.

This is the kind of stuff you'd expect from The Onion, not a supposedly legitimate news outlet.

I'd like to see what type of credentials these people have. I am surprised that there are no Chinese people on the task force...

Would you prefer the best people in a position or would it be better to have diversity and not be as good?

Diversity is a valid issue to debate, but this article is bonkers.

Diversity isn't a value. If you have diversity, good for you, if you don't, also good for you. As long as tasks get done and the day is saved, the color of the people's skin doesn't matter. it's purely aesthetic

This faux importance of diversity is, ironically, to put importance on the color of people's skin, and to say that it actually matters....and of course, we have a word for that....racism.

This is so true. Unfortunately, "diversity is a strength" has crept into the national conversation and is treated like an axiom. Its not. It could be a strength, it could be a weakness, it could mean jack ****.

Have you considered the possibility that better-qualified candidates were overlooked due to race or gender?

I've worked in government my entire professional working career. If anything in the US, minorities are given preferential treatment in government positions.

Its not much of a stretch to consider that Trump's white nationalism prevents him from considering from the widest, deepest talent pool possible.

Diversity may give you a larger number of perspectives - give you factors to consider that you might not have realized from a homogeneous group.

You better be careful. Don't get caught watching CNN, or was this something reported on Fox?

In theory that’s a correct assessment. In practice, if there are plenty of qualified people in the ‘ethnic diversity pot’ and 100% of the employees as white, that’s an issue. It means that white people are disproportionately hired and favoured and minorities are excluded. By the way, it’s no just an aesthetic issue, people with diverse ethnic backgrounds bring different experience to an issue. Thus, diversity is absolutely a value.

That is diversity of thought, opinion, and ideas - extremely valuable.

That is not diversity of outward physical characteristics such as the ones focused on by the article in the OP that mark and associate people's ethnicities - extremely meaningless.

Has that same news outlet also done a story about all the Democratic nominees being all white as well?

That depends on a lot of things, and a lot of factors. Why jump to racism....or, lack of diversity if you will....if there are plenty of other explanations? I do agree it is an issue, IF there are plenty of qualified minority candidates, but i've worked in recruitment firms for years, and most applicants are usually of one race to start with, unless it's for medical labs, in which case most applicants, and therefore the most hires, were women of either white or hispanic background. The only black woman i've ever seen hired as a biochemical researcher was a mix of black and white.

Equality in hiring depends much less on population and qualified candidates, and more on #1 the people who apply, and #2 the positions that are open.
