The CNN anchor John King asked after Tuesday's Democratic debate whether endorsements of Sen. Bernie Sanders from the party's most famous freshman congresswomen of color could be "too urban."He was responding to a Washington Post report that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York would endorse Sanders, and a CNN report that Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib would also do so. Since the debate, Omar has officially endorsed Sanders. King said that these endorsements would "certainly help" Sanders. "But it will also, I think ... have some of the other candidates say: 'Wait a minute, is this too far left? Is this too uncompromising? Is it too urban? Is it too internet? Does the Democratic Party need to find a broader audience?"

This is the same network which regularly says that Sanders doesn't appeal to black people; that his base is too white; isn't diverse enough to win the nomination. Anyways, onto promote Mayor Pete and Klobuchar....

I'm still not entirely sure what he meant by "too urban", I mean about 80% of our population lives in urban areas. Is the nation "too urban" as well?
 
I agree that there is a real split today between large urban areas and the suburbs and rural areas. The large urban areas tend to be mostly democratic, suburbs and rural areas tend to be more conservative.

Thanks to Trump, the suburbs are becoming more and more liberal.
 
Too urban in that the first three contests are Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Anyone who still wants to be in the running come March needs to either win or come a strong second in one of those three.

In context, I don't think a racial component was meant. Obviously, everyone knows Trump has the Ohio voter who works on a farm. By urban, he means "not middle America". Urban means you're either an elite rich liberal living in a 50th story penthouse, or a minority getting shot in 'certain neighborhoods'. Neither are middle America.
 
King's tweet:

King is only partially correct here. Current racial dynamics allow for political candidates and their policies to be tied to specific races. CNN has no issue in doing this, neither does the public at large. It's naturally assumed that politicians can be "for blacks" to the exclusion of other races. It makes perfect sense that if a policy benefits blacks, it must therefore be a detriment to whites, and vice versa.

It goes on for some time. So when King says "nothing to do with color", he isn't saying that it's bad to associate specific racial support with politicians, he's saying that he didn't use the term "urban" in an insulting context to refer to blacks. He would use the proper terms "black" or "African American" to racially distinguish 'those' Americans from 'other' Americans, not "urban", as defined by CNN here.

What exactly is "urban support"? I myself am an urban dweller.

Is that some sort of code for black support?
 
Personally, I get tired of hearing about middle America as if it is a monolith. Or urban America for that matter. When the term middle America is used, it tends to mean rural America. There are only a couple defining traits of rural America. One is that it is white, the second is that it is heavily evangelical. As for urban America, its just about anything you can imagine. But is a middle class American living in an urban area not a member of middle America? What the hell is middle America anyway?
