Why are you assuming they are and should be trying to be representative of the US population? Even though some of the Doodles are regionally specific, one of the ideas with this kind of thing would be to bring up events and people we might not be aware of. That was essentially what Google said they'd do following the 2014 study I linked previously.
I suspect the gender balance is slightly skewed by the multiple Women's World Cup Doodles. If it had been a Men's World Cup year (and maybe if the US Men's soccer team was any good ), it might have been different.
I agree about women's soccer, they had multiple entries. I'll do 2016-2017 next, then 2014-2015 to see if there are any demographic changes. While I do concur that some 'international' is good, it approaches 50%.
I may do a Nigerian Doodle (or other 'minority' country), to see how much of their content would be foreign to them. I'm guessing that minority cultures are considered more sacred and more valid than US culture, so they would be exposed more to local demographics rather than foreign.
What really surprises me is the number of Asians in US Doodles, that's my takeaway.
