This is not the first time the consumer product model has been with us. In the turn of the 20th century much of the newspaper business mirrored a lot of what we now see in cable news.

In the early days of broadcasting the attempt, imperfect as it might have been, was made to model television news as more of a loss leader/public service. The phrase "serving the public interest" was hard baked into the model, and the three major television networks traded and banked on both profits derived from prime time and daytime programming, and also competed for prestige points from viewer trust in television news journalism's pledge of objectivity.

The invention of the cable news model created unseen consequences because with cable news, there were no daytime and prime time entertainment shows to offset a loss leader/public service model, and the pressure was, perhaps rightfully, now interpreted as government interference.
Thus the old model largely collapsed and was declared obsolete.

The consumer product model for news is quite simply that which filled the vacuum. When news is your only product, it has to have "consumer appeal" or else you cannot sell your product.
    I agree, all true.
The only reason to be anti-libertarian is there are people you want to control that you wouldn't be able to.

I am so glad that I never had to deal with customers.

So many of them are nuts or, more accurately, arrogant and refuse to keep their place.

For example, those men and women who bring their dogs into grocery stores, even though the animals are not service animals. Their owners figure that the staff will not dare tell them to leave -- and they are right.

    Goddamnit take your "like"

The way I think about it is it’s a numbers game and 99% of people are fine, but you deal with enough people and you’re gonna get that 1% of lunatics walk through your door and do something you can never prepare for, something you can’t write a procedure or a policy for and you’re like.... holy ****.
