IMHO, mainstream media = big media outlets with large audiences. It’s mostly entertainment rather than news, but this thread seems to be about mainstream news media, even if the OP didn’t specify that. I would include ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, The NYT, The WaPo, USA Today, Time, Newsweek, and maybe some other periodicals. I might include NPR and PBS, but I’m not sure how big their audiences are.

I never heard the "fake news" expression until Trump got into office. He coined it. This is how he rallies his base - telling them to only listen to the lies on FAUX News, which consistently gets the worst news reputability ratings of all the networks.
