Arlington, VA — February 28, 2018 — Sharon Percy Rockefeller, President and CEO of WETA Washington, D.C., the flagship public broadcaster in the nation’s capital, today announced the launch of "In*Principle,"*a new, eight-week primetime public affairs show on PBS produced by WETA. The half-hour program will feature co-hosts Michael Gerson, a frequent contributor to "PBS NewsHour,"*syndicated Washington Post columnist and author of the book "Heroic Conservatism"; and Amy Holmes, a political news commentator formerly of MSNBC and TheBlaze TV and Radio Network.

As a still frequent viewer of old "Firing Line" episodes with Bill Buckley, a big fan of Ben Wattenberg's "Think-Tank," occasional viewer of "Uncommon Knowledge" and sad that the Bush Library's "Ideas in Action" series was cancelled, I'm happy to see something of that vein being picked up by PBS again.

When PBS wants to, they distribute the best conservative media and political dialogue on television.

PBS worried it might lose its meal ticket? :)

Maybe, but I expect that PBS could make it on contributions alone if necessary. On the other side of the issue is the possibility that someone like Soros could fund them and turn it into a mouth piece for Americans for Progress, or something equally squalid.

The fact any show names it bias to me shows its bias. How about just talk about the issue and facts. By calling it a conservative program, they are stating their bias and it will likely be full of unsubstantiated bs and political hackery

Is it a news program or a news commentary program?

Having to point out that they are going to create a "conservative" show, that - by itself - is admission that all their previous BS has been left/liberal/communism.

There will be a bias, but it will be a meaningful bias. Have you ever listened to or watched:

Firing Line
Think-Tank
Ideas in Action
Uncommon Knowledge
Axe Files with David Axelrod
Fareed Zakaria GPS
Conversations with Bill Kristol

If so, you get what sort of guests they might bring (typically of higher quality than the ones you mostly see during the evening news or cable news), the structure of the program, and how guests communicate with one another.

There is a slant to each of those hosts. They pick people within their political circles, but then they also bring on folks that arent from their side so they can advance a discussion (not exactly a debate, certainly not a shouting match) about issues.

Yes, each of those are "biased" but they are able to bring good content for audiences to consume. It's just not flashy, and it's certainly not rude or bombastic. And that's a good thing. They take ideas and experiences of their guests seriously.

This will be meaningful programming.

Greetings, humbolt. :2wave:

And there are those that still continue to bring up "Russian" collusion while downplaying or ignoring everything else being funded to cause major planned destabilization problems for this country in the form of riots, demonstrations, property destruction, etc.

I assume that since mega-billionaire Soros suddenly decided to become a US citizen in 2014 - he's going to be 88 years old this year, he must have had a reason, and that's sufficient for me to ponder WTH comes next, because he hates the fact that "We The People" have the Constitution and Bill of Rights which used with the ballot box is the only legal way we have to maintain our country's freedoms, short of another Civil War!

While a fair comment, part of the trouble these days is that so many people treat the latter as they do the former, and even the former is generally garbage if it's on TV.

Still, if PBS is liked it used to be, whatever this is will probably be better than the usual TV swill.

To an extent, this is somewhat true in terms of quantity of broadcast programs. However, it's really not so simple.

Firing Line was broadcast from 1966-1999, and went through 3 different formats. That's 33 years of conservative discussion and/or meaningful ideological debate, with over 1,500 episodes.

While PBS broadcast Bill Moyers through various series, it also broadcast Ben Wattenberg's "Think-Tank" and related documentaries throughout the 1990s on up to the close of the Bush administration, shortly before Wattenberg's retirement.

Documentaries like "America at a Crossroads" had Richard Perle defend and debate the merits of the Iraq War in its really messy phase in the latter half of the 2nd Bush term.

But what PBS has been able to do that Fox News and the like haven't, is actually elevate the work of those conservatives who aren't trying to make a name for themselves by being television show anchors or those making pithy comments squeezed in between the Rush Limbaugh model news commentary broadcast.

The conservative think tank world is fairly well financed and can be given grants by organizations like the John Olin Foundation and companies like Pfizer to do television content that would, in turn, be broadcast on public television.

They just become better programs than what Fox News or CNN could deliver to its audiences, regardless of political orientation or ideology. PBS just can pump out better television.

The closest thing I have seen private news stations do in having that style of content is CNN's Zakaria GPS, and he's not exactly who you would look to to provide conservative thought exercises.

I find it hard to watch Tucker anymore because he keeps interrupting his guests and not letting them get two words in edgewise.
While I agree with his lean sometimes (but not always), I still feel any guest should be treated as a guest.
Though they made be paid to appear, they are still YOUR GUEST, and should be afforded manners and cordiality.

ie...let them say their piece....summarize to ensure you got it right....then offer counterpoints.
What a concept.

He was on Morning Joe today talking about how the Evangelicals have lost their way while supporting Trump. Interesting guy.

Greetings, Hatuey. :2wave:

After I read your above post, I spent some time this morning trying to find where I read yesterday that it said 2014. I did read 1961 this morning, but I intend to continue to search for what I typed since I found it kind of surprising that it was so recent. Heaven only knows what the article I read yesterday was referring to, but I'm curious to find out!

That's the way I see it too. It is a blatant if unintended admission that their other programming is pointedly NOT conservative.

That would be an exaggerated read, as the press release does not explicitly say such. That would be my addition. *I* made mention of that as a demonstration of the lack of conservative-informed television programming besides Fox News, which I consider far too cartoonish to be taken seriously.
