School Shooting in Kentucky Is Nation’s 11th of Year. It’s Jan. 23.

The NYT makes the claim that there have been 11 school shootings this year by using the everytown site

If you go to the everytown site (School Shootings in America Since 2013) they only have 8 (soon to be 9 with the Tennessee shooting) listed for this year,

here are some of those 9:

A 31 year old man commits suicide in an empty school parking lot

A college peace officer leaves a gun unattended during a criminal justice and a student shoots the wall as a target

A random shot from off campus breaks a window at a college

This is why the gun control movement has no support whatsoever because actual school shooting events are rare so to stay in the headlines they have to fudge the numbers and turn a veteran's PTSD suicide into a "school shooting"

I don't believe in using school shootings to justify gun control measures, but does it REALLY make it that much better that there have been 8 school shootings versus 11? 8 school shootings are 8 more than what we should have in this country.

Except there havent been 8. Go read what the site calls a "school shooting", there have really only been 2 this year. 2 too many but still not the sensational 11 number that the NYT wants to make you afraid with.

I don't think you quite read the OP, or the links provided....

Another case of fake news for political reasons.

I would like to think a single school shooting is too many, but god damn.

It's ridiculous how callous and indifferent this country has become to shootings in school.

Any are too many but that does not make 2 or 3 become 8 or 11. Why not compare school shootings to school stabbings? Crime exists and some of it occurs inside schools or on school property - that fact does not depend on guns in any way.

As the saying goes....there are lies, damnable lies, and then there are statistics. (paraphrased) Which is exactly what the NYT's and the Everytown site is doing. Technically they are correct in that a "school shooting" did happen. Gun was shot on school grounds. Which is all the criteria that they need to make their statement "technically" true. Never mind the connotation that is illicited nor the perception.

This is how the media attempts to control society and is the reason why they have lost the respect people once held of them.

Oh my god, 11 vs 9, wow, that dishonest NY Times. It is astounding you people actually think you are making a solid point. God, its so pathetic

Oh, and here are other sources saying 11 as well

Do you think the point the OP is making is "callousness" toward school shootings?

What's ironic is that you thought that you just made a solid point. Did you read some of those school shootings? Think they're any where near as dangerous as what the media often portrays as "school shooting"s? Usually when the media talks about a "school shooting" they're talking about someone entering the school to shoot it up and kill anyone and everyone that they possibly can. Now they're counting every little thing, including a guy that committed suicide while the school wasn't even in session...meaning no one around but him. And other "shootings" that have nothing what so ever to do with how the media normally portrays "school shootings". This is nothing more than an attempt to pad the numbers. To make things seem far worse than they actually are. That was the point of the OP.

No, the OP is complaining that the NYT's articles is listing events that don't fit the typical description of a school shootings as a "school shooting".

The bigger problem at hand here is that we've reached the point where school shootings like these don't even register on national news anymore. That's profoundly disturbing.

Then that has nothing to do with the thread.

How about the third k12 school shooting in 24 hours? Does that pass your test? RIP the victims. Thoughts and prayers as usual.

Then that has nothing to do with the thread.

The fact that we're reached the point that we have to argue about what constitutes a school shooting is very disturbing, but whatever floats your boat.

Do you think some guy with PTSD offing himself in the school parking lot in the middle of the night is a "school shooting"?

If you have to ask...

That doesn't answer the question. Do you think it's a "school shooting," or not?

I did, actually. It's called a joke.

No, it's not a school shooting. The NYT's was wrong to classify that as a school shooting. It's unfortunate, but not a school shooting.

Which is the point of the OP.

Don't you think the NYT's conflating of it with "school shootings" might lend to the "callousness" to which you are objecting? You know, crying wolf, causing people to pay less attention?

Far more callous is the fact that this has hardly been noted by the general public. We've grown to just accept school shootings happen. It's sad.

The NYT was wrong. I know that, you know that, the OP knows that, which is why I didn't quote the OP or try to challenge his claim. I just said commented how disturbing this entire trend is.

But, why lie? 8 school shootings isn't bad enough, so they have to lie and say there have been 11?

Not entirely sure why you say that.

Most of the stats that you see are padded or cherry picked simply to push a narrative because they know people are too lazy to bother researching it.

For instance, that Right Wing extremism worse than Islamic terrorism meme from the GAO going around. The fact that the date starts on 9/12 should set off immediate red flags but when you look into the actual events they add in stuff the average person wouldn't think nor care about like a Neo-Nazi killing a pedophile in prison or a white supremacist killing another white supremacist for not objecting to having a black cell mate. When you go that far to have to manipulate data in order to make your point or sway public opinion then you are clearly losing the argument.
