Bias of the Uneducated Commentator

Exactly. Education needn't be job training. It has it's own value.
My biggest regret in life is not getting a degree in something, anything, before I started my apprenticeship.

Getting a degree, in my mind, isn't the equivalent to education.
Do you read, explore new topics, attempt to perfect the topics you know well?
Then you're being educated.

You hold your surgeon to a higher standard than "exploring topics they know well". What crock Harry. A degree doesn't confer intelligence or prowess in a field, it's just one potential indicator of success/knowledge. "No degree" means nothing other than you don't have that credential...you'd have to demonstrate that competency in other ways which is a lot more difficult and hard to measure. And in most fields, that's hard to do if you don't have formal training...and at the PhD level from a good university, it's not just sitting in a vacuum, it's met with review and discussion with instructors and peers. Sitting alone reading the internet, not the same thing.

Beck at least had the honesty to admit he doesn't believe the nonsense he says, and considers himself more a rodeo clown...making a show out of controversy, the "coin of the realm".
Fox news was designed to be a GOP partisan mouthpiece, it's basically like a state-run media outlet, but it's just the state of "the GOP". You have to know this right?

Maddow's show is biased, no doubt. But she's got intelligent arguments and there is a lot of research they do (her plus others...it's a team effort). I've unfortunately listened to Rush, Hannity, and Beck, and knowing that people take them seriously or think they are anything but entertainers, is beyond me. It leads to accusations of deplorable, etc.

MSNBC bias in the way it is today, exists *because of GOP partisan media*. Remove the rapid GOP political state-run media, and things would settle back down.

Surgeon is an occupation, thus they have an education in said occupation.
That doesn't mean the surgeon is someone I go to for philosophy or politics, just for things related to surgery.

Maddow is as much of a tabloid politics presenter as anything on Fox.

Interesting bit to note here in the following graphic.

lol...yeah, let's trust the dropouts.

There are people who are smart but do not have "book smarts" but the three you posted, Rush, Sean and Glenn do not look like they are any kind of smart at all. But that is a very personal opinion.

8 Hugely Successful People Who Didn't Graduate College

https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/249683

Steve Jobs
At the time of his death in 2011, Jobs' net worth was $11 billion. Not bad for a college dropout. Steve Wozniak, Jobs' brainy counterpart, is said to be worth about $100 million, and he never completed college either.

Richard Branson
Richard Branson's net worth is said to be roughly $4.9 billion. Founder of Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Records, Virgin Mobile and other Virgin brands, Branson never completed high school, and dropped out at 16 years of age. Not only that, but he was dyslexic and had poor academic performance.

Dave Thomas
Dave Thomas, founder and CEO of fast-food empire Wendy's, dropped out of high school to work full time at the Hobby House Restaurant in Fort Wayne, Ind. Although he passed away in 2002 at 69 years old, his net worth was said to be $99 million.

David Green
David Green, whose net worth is nearly $6 billion, never went to college. This founder of Hobby Lobby -- a chain of arts and crafts stores -- has a high school diploma, but passed on higher education to start his own home-based business in 1970 on a $600 loan. By 1972, the business was successful enough that he was able to open his first retail store.

Larry Ellison
Larry Ellison, former CEO of Oracle, dropped out of two colleges. His net worth? A cool $54 billion. After building databases for the CIA, he founded Software Development Laboratories (SDL) with two partners in 1977. This company would eventually become Oracle Systems Corporation in 1982.

Kevin Rose
This under-40 online entrepreneur co-founded Revision3, Pownce and Milk, but is probably most known for his involvement with Digg. He attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and majored in computer science, but dropped out after two years.

Michael Dell
Michael Dell, of course, is the founder of Dell Computers. His net worth is said to be nearly $20 billion. He attended the University of Texas, but eventually dropped out.

Rachael Ray
This cooking TV show star, author and businesswoman never attended college, and doesn't have any formal training in the culinary arts. Her net worth is a cool $60 million. Pretty good for someone who doesn't have qualifications in the field she works in.

Do you read, explore new topics, attempt to perfect the topics you know well?
Then you're being educated.

I get that but it's hard to replace the university advantages of a curriculum and guidance and instruction and discussion and completing assignments and being occasionally tested. All those things add up to achieving a degree of knowledge and expertise in a subject that might take decades to realize on your own.
Those four years when I might have been in school were pretty much wasted anyway, looking back now.

I agree and don't at the same time.
My personal vision for formal education is much different than what exists present day.
In my experience, there were many lackluster instructors, who seemed to only want to collect a paycheck, than there were those who wanted to inspire.
Those that had a passion to really get people to understand, usually came from groups who were previously employed in the field that they taught.
Insurance agent, politician's spouse, former air force, etc.

You shouldn't be ashamed.
These type of people attach their identity to a piece of paper, that millions of others have done.
It's as if they're unique, but they're not.

Brilliant people the world over have never stepped into a university and have done amazing things.
They're usually autodidacts and don't need to be lead by nose.

The two smartest people I ever knew both lacked degrees. Close behind them was my father who had a regard for education even never having earned a degree himself.

If you can only recognize that a person is smart because of what's hanging on the wall, that person is lacking in so many other things.

Other college drop outs missed in this extensive list include the brains behind Apple, Microsoft and Facebook.

Mark Twain said something along the lines that he never left schooling interfere with his education.
