This... Just.. seriously:

According to Thae, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is "desperate in maintaining his rule by relying on his [development of] nuclear weapons and ICBM." He was using an acronym for intercontinental ballistic missiles — a long range rocket that in theory would be capable of hitting the U.S.
Now, this is the first time ICBM comes up in a story, personally I've been fascinated by ICBM's since I was a child, so the patronizingly simple explination irked me but I just waved it off, maybe someone doesn't know what an ICBM is, fine.

But then they do this:

North Korea is estimated to have upward of eight nuclear weapons but has not demonstrated the ability to attach them to a long-range rocket, an ICBM, capable of hitting the U.S.
North Korean Defector Tells Lester Holt '''World Should be Ready''' - NBC News

Seriously? Are the NBC News readers that dumb they need simpleton explanations twice in the same story?

That's poor editing more than anything. Very likely, the second explainer was part of a shirttail -- a prewritten attachment to a live story.

Still, you're really digging for nits to pick here.

Repetition and speaking in over simplified language works.

It's what got Trump elected.

Just looks like they missed something in editing.

"... a long range rocket that in theory ..." In theory? There's a question as to the accuracy of the claim that an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile could travel intercontinentally? Why didn't they use the same qualifier to their use of the term "nuclear weapons" that "in theory" could explode and "in theory" kill people if they are put on the tip of an ICBM "in theory" they would need to be technologically capable of surviving re-entry into the atmosphere?

The couching of terms and the danger certain things present to the US is not new to NBC. They are PC, and use PC terms when possible (undocumented immigrant vs illegal alien, the refusal to use the term Islamic Extremism, etc.), and when there's no PC term for an item like an ICBM, they are left with no other alternative than to question the reality and actual capability of an item to harm us by couching with terms like, "in theory."

Because "in theory" the North Koreans could actually build one that works. So far, they haven't been able to do so in reality. Let's hope they never do.

They've got to play to their base...

What you say is true about the North Koreans. However, that's not what NBC said in the article.

Not really, the wording of it is like "people are stupid, let's spell it out slowly". I'd of mocked Foxnews had this crap run there.

Yes, sometimes you have to explain things twice in order for people to understand it. Or more like in customer service you have to do it five times or more! I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to explain what an ICBM is to some of my clients...

Do you have any background in newswriting or journalism?

I think we have more to be concerned about than the man defining what an ICBM is. I see it as more underscoring the situation.

You are complaining that NBC News is biased against its own readers because it says that intercontinental means it can reach the U.S.?

This is worth a thread?

Weren't you complaining elsewhere about supposedly lame attacks on Trump? And THIS is worth a thread to you?

It has been said: tell them what you're going to say, say it, then tell them what you said.

Especially given that it's not a rocket - which are unguided - but a missile.

Among other things what kid is fascinated by ICBMs?

Honestly, children of the cold war. We heard a LOT about those things.

I knew what the acronym ICBM stood for when I was SEVEN.

Either way, the Nork defector is a plant. A clumsy one at that delivering news that Kim is going nuclear.

Kim needs to wear body armor in bed for awhile, because it's just a matter of time until he catches a bullet.

I too have been watching Lester "live from Korea" on the last few evenings. I'm sure you're already aware that the coverage has a certain propaganda value, and that most everything does on the mainstream media.

Yes, most coverage seems to treat the viewer as a 7 year old.
