The Source of Media Bias

Hello all!

A colleague and I recently had a discussion with a group of students on bias in the media and from where people perceive that bias to stem. I thought bringing a particular part of that discussion to this forum would be interesting. Shortly into the conversation, we began discussing the issue within the context below, which I'll provide as a sort of prompt for the sake of the forum. As a note, this discussion was largely centered around mainstream media (television, online, and print), but feel free to bring in other forms of media if you think it adds something to the discussion.

We tend to see the media as having political bias when a potentially more accurate view would be that it has a financial bias. Media networks and outlets target demographics the same way other forms of entertainment do, giving them more of what they want to see/hear and less of what they don't because they are driven by viewership, subscriptions, a generally loyal base audience, etc.. They continue to be profitable, their audience entertained, and everyone is happy, even if some of that happiness is derived from criticizing a particular outlet, show, or pundit.

Additionally, we have this perspective that the media has a shadowy agenda, distorting the truth for political gain, covering up the actions of government, and everything in between. But could it be that our problems with the media persist because we fail to see it for what it is - a form of entertainment? From that, would it be more accurate to say media bias stems from targeting their audience more so than political reasons? What would this imply about how Americans consume media?

So what are your thoughts? It could be that you don't give any credence to this idea at all, or perhaps you have an entirely different perspective.

Well, simply put: correct.

Media bias definitely owes a lot to the desire to target a particular audience and/or to serve whatever audience has cropped up. I wouldn't pin it down to the exclusive cause because, among other things, everybody is biased in some direction. No matter how they try, journalists, editors, owners, etc., will all be influenced by their own biases.

Staffing is probably an issue too, but that also gets back to your point. If the owner(s) are only hiring people that are biased in one direction in order to serve the customer, then naturally the publication will lean in a particular direction.

The source of media bias is m-o-n-e-y baby; doh-re-mi!

I assume that it is simply that they are parochial people, living in their own silos and only communicating with like minded people. They probably think that they are worldly, diverse people who talk to others from many countries but these are mainly people like them. In a global society a parochial silo may be geographically diverse and still be socially/culturally parochial. And as such they really don't see their own biases. We all have biases and when you can't see your own that seems to be proof of how biased you are.

So you still refuse to back up your claims... This is why your posts have no credibility. You make everyone on your side of the fence look dishonest, so keep up the good work.

You know good and well that I've posted proof after proof about FOX bias. FOX perverts. FOX lies. Every time I post a proof, you change the subject or scoff at it. You have shown me nothing that shows that FOX has any degree of reputability. As thus, it is nothing but lying Conservative trash, which only serves to rile up their constituents into a frenzy of anger. And I see that anger in your posts.

I'm talking about the claim you made, which I quoted on this thread. I realize that since all you do 24/7 is bash Fox News like your hero David Brock, it's difficult for to keep track of each specific attack.

Why don't you sift through the garbage (aka your posts) and respond accordingly. Surprize me and everyone else by actually backing up your accusation without citing Brock's book.

This article pretty much tells it all. FOX is the most biased news network. And like the article says, they are highly effective. They sure have you buffalo'd.
The Most Biased Name in News | FAIR

When it comes to Fox News Channel, conservatives don’t feel the need to “work the ref.” The ref is already on their side. Since its 1996 launch, Fox has become a central hub of the conservative movement’s well-oiled media machine. Together with the GOP organization and its satellite think tanks and advocacy groups, this network of fiercely partisan outlets–such as the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal editorial page and conservative talk-radio shows like Rush Limbaugh’s–forms a highly effective right-wing echo chamber where GOP-friendly news stories can be promoted, repeated and amplified. Fox knows how to play this game better than anyone.

You made a comment about the coverage by Fox News on the Martin/Zimmerman ordeal. Let me refresh your memory:

I couldn't even understand most of the blacks that FOX interviewed. Despicable! Highly racist. Degrading.

Are you going to substantiate your accusations with some evidence, or should I prepare for another irrelevant copy and paste job and just accept that you're incapable of thinking for yourself?

Sure let me go through all the FOX archives to satisfy your biased opinions. What, you don't believe that? You are surely a FOX junkie and a Rush Limbaugh adherent. Good luck with life.

In other words, you are not going to substantiate your accusations and you're not capable of thinking for yourself.

I guess we'll be hearing from you the next time Media Matters issues you new marching orders.
