Why Saturday Night Live Is More Important Than Ever

Always the case with any satire. Got to keep it novel. But then it does have a gold mine of events to pick from with trump.
If this was england or new zealand i would stand on firmer ground with historical references to back me. Political satire is a well used knife in politics of those countries. But american satire has not had that kind of test. As has been stated on this thread a few times that american humour tends to get a bit personal and mean. That will turn people off.

South Park and The Simpsons have traditionally done satire better, especially South Park. I personally think that Saturday Night Live's overall quality has been low for awhile now. Weekend Update is probably the sharpest tool in their box, but it can't carry the show. Maybe this will spur their ratings for a bit, but not sure how they could sustain them. Phil Hartman was probably their last great comedic genius and he has been dead almost 20 years.

So did SNL dedicate time every week to lampooning Obama? Honest question.

He was regularly portrayed, but remember this is a pop culture kind of show....the people they lampoon usually are well known because of how they have behaved. There are people currently being lampooned on SNL that are caricatures of themselves. The writers don't have to stretch their imagination to get the point across.

I agree, as far as s.park goes, never was a simpson fan.
Snl has only had a mediocre amount of my intention as well. It is the rise in popularity that has me interested now rather than the history of it. and i do have to admit that i am not making any claim of what will be or even might be.
Americans do have some good comedians but they are for the most non political.

If this was england or new zealand i would have a stronger argument because both have a good history of using political satire effectively. But neither have used a late night show as a platform either. So this is new ground that america is going for.
Can snl do something? I hope so. One, because it is very effective and two because it will give us a good laugh which is probably needed badly in america right now.

Your whole education system is quite questionable. Do not expect me to treat those who would support trump as if they had one of any worth.

Where are you from?

Is SNL all you guys have left after Trump destroyed the democratic party ? Do you really think SNL will last Trump's 7.99 years in office ??

I do not even think america will last through his office if it is that long.
But at least you have demonstrated that trump followers do have a sense of humor. Even if it is only for others to laugh at them.

Can't wait fro this version of SNL after the 77 minute psychotic rambling of his press conference proving he is incompetent and lost. "Tear him up SNL"!!!!!!!

I hope you are more informed about New Zealand's politics than American's !
