Why Saturday Night Live Is More Important Than Ever

Every court needs a court jester. SNL will do what they do and life will go on.

I think most people get that it is a comedy show.

Yeah, we definitely need the fruit of hate in this country....

It's comedy, not hate. There is a difference.

Albeit comedy can take on a hate sort of characteristic. But if it goes that way it will fail. History demonstrates that with what passed for humour under dictators like hitler or stalin. Bitter humour was condoned to a degree and plenty of jokes that said something personal about the leaders or directed away from direct action against the dictator were passable. While any humour that actually struck directly at administration or questioned the credibility of government was immediately shut down.

This is why some satirical political parties do well. Not by creating jokes about the politicians personal habits or looks but by parodying their policies.

Hate jokes do not attract crowds, they only work in small minorities. Any fruit to bear here will be of a different kind of comedy one that attracts crowds.

As long as it entertains you, then enjoy it. There are other programs/outlets that I think do a better job of actually informing people.

To satirise your government and it's president in the way they do is not for the purpose of informing. There is a direct opposition to trump. No matter if the trump supporters call it whinging it still exists. Comedy when used effectively is quite potent and can undermine trumps activities. That is there purpose. My question still is, do the trump supporters understand this or do they dismiss it.

Back before they became political. Members like Laraine Newman, Jane Curtain, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris , John Belushi, and Chevy Chase.

That was a great crew!

That was pretty good ... and old.
Isn't Maxine the only one still there?
SNL needs to drag her into this century.

With the endless supply of material the Trump administration is handing to them, why would they?;)

SNL is obviously a leftwing mouthpiece. Nothing they do is done in a fair way. Whatever they did to Barack was at the teehee level, while for Trump is all out war. We dismiss it for it obvious bias.

Correct it is as you say. This is politics after all and there are many arrows in their quiver. The source was never under question nor is the reason as to why you might dismiss it. My question with it is based on it's growing popularity and what comedy and satire can effect. And you might just as easily dismiss its growing popularity as a fad. Hillary did.

Yeah, I don't mind a laugh, but they have gotten downright vicious. They didn't play on Obama hardly at all. They tiptoed around him because he had a (D) behind his name. Therefore they are dismissed.

The thing is that unless that satire evolves, it really doesn't do the things you seem to think it will do. The Trump impersonations have been a one-trick pony for Baldwin. If he doesn't find a way to do more, then he won't be effective at all. People bore easily with the exact same impersonation over and over and over again. It is in my opinion why their Hillary impersonations were so much better---they were far more dynamic than just walking around with puckered lips.

Of course they did not play obama they are left and more in support of him and the right lack the wit to even see satire as a weapon so they of course would not do such a thing.
Silly to dismiss something because the opposition has not bothered to turn it on themselves but save it for the right.

Always the case with any satire. Got to keep it novel. But then it does have a gold mine of events to pick from with trump.
If this was england or new zealand i would stand on firmer ground with historical references to back me. Political satire is a well used knife in politics of those countries. But american satire has not had that kind of test. As has been stated on this thread a few times that american humour tends to get a bit personal and mean. That will turn people off.

sort of like the life of a coke fiend. highs then crashes

Apt comparison, especially since a few past SNL cast members have done drugs or have died from their drug use.

Is that not the whole point though. It is not rare now. And becoming less so.

Youre confusing " funny " with anything that attacks Trump

Yes, the Spicer skit was hillarious, but the Kellyanne Fatal attraction skit was hard to watch.

No i am not. I have already talked about a distinction between just picking on the mans personality or appearance and ridiculing his efforts in office. Snide and funny gets a giggle, but to lampoon the political views and efforts builds a foundation for people coming back.
Humour does not appeal to all.

But a very good sign to look for in anybody is that if someone cannot find something funny about a particular topic then they are probably taking it far to seriously.

Yeah, I'll just bet you're hoping that Trump and his security team is just yukking it up in the Oval Office while they discuss our national security policies.

No, i am hoping that the arrogance and lack of education among trump and his supporters will have them turn a blind eye until to late.
