NBC to shut down Breaking News App

I am sad to see this go. It led to many of my threads here. Also it helped me get on this site when news was breaking to see if you guys were talking about whatever breaking news was happening:

NBC to shutter Breaking News app | TheHill

A DEC 8 story.

Almost no one cared.

Closing was probably a good idea.

If after all these years it both loses money and no one cares...

The only problem with this is that if these mainstream news media continue to lose money and shut down, eventually all we'll be left with is conspiracy-themed alt. media and the BAD part about that is it will eventually become too difficult to find out what is true and unbiased, and what is not. Nobody will be able to tell the difference. While the conspiracy-themed alt. media isn't necessarily a bad thing... you can't have credible media with out an effective competition.

Freedom of the press will become endangered...

Corporations could go back to considering owning them a public service worth their charity.

Just an idea..that the Elite class to include the wealthy could try to pull their weight.

Could try to fix America up a bit

For the kids.

I know.

"NO"

Not profitable.

So, yeah. Like you said.

When the MSM became alt. media, they signed their own death certificate.

There is still demand for straight news, so it might be possible at some point in the future for such a source to become available.

The problem as I see it, is that there doesn't appear to be many journalists/reporters qualified to provide content.

True, but the fact remains...

While I don't follow the mainstream media as religiously as others in the left-wing camp, it is essential that the mainstream media returns to an unbiased path and remains at the forefront. The issue here is that the mainstream media is venturing too far into partisan territory (CNN spearheading the Left, and Fox spearheading the Right). They can only save themselves, and if they continue to venture down these partisan paths over emotional and irrational sentiment originating from a fear of their opponent(s), then they will be committing us further to the mercy of a post-truth society run by emotions and politicking as opposed to logic and facts.

NBC has a massive conflict of interest so long as Trump remains part of one of their top shows. It's not in their interest to criticise one of their acts.

I misread that. I thought they were shutting down their "Faking New App"... oh well... I guess that is still alive and well!

Because Trump has so much influence in what goes into the NBC news.

Then do that. I will wait.

It's quite simple. NBC has a financial investment in Trump's reputation. This threatens the impartiality of NBC news reporting which could damage their investment.

Get it now?

Trump isn't appearing on the show. He has nothing to do with the production of the show. The show is going to bomb. It's fun to watch people running around screaming "the sky is falling" tho. Do you really think Disney is going to tell Rachel Maddow to be nice to Trump because of Celebrity Apprentice? Really? Get serious.

Considering I never even knew about this service, it's fair to say I won't be missing it!

It seems that was the problem. I certainly didn't know about it either.

As an aside, sometimes I keep track of the push notifications I get from the multitude of news apps I have running. You can learn a lot about the developers and content providers by what they decide to report about when it comes to weather and sports. Chances are they tend to operate much like we do with social media. If it storms here, we talk about it. If our favorite or geographically close sports team wins or loses a match, we talk about it. Everyone else's weather and sports team can go feck off. So, some nights I find out that CNN, because it's located in Atlanta, is all about wanting us to know the Hawks won another basketball game or everyone else headquartered in NYC tells us that NYC snowed 2" last night. But if Green Bay won a great match, nadda. If someplace in the midwest got 12" of snow, since they aren't on the east coast, most outlets don't give much of a damn to send out a push notification.

Hasn't stopped them yet.

So long as it was real breaking news, but too often anymore these media outlets are more interested in being first than being right.
