Fake news stories and headlines on social media [W:36]

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

At first I was going to dismiss it, being it's by Buzzfeed. Then I remembered that if anyone would want accurate information on the effectiveness of clickbait, it'd be Buzzfeed.

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

Maybe it is the individuality that scares you.

Are you truly an individual if you purposefully consume news that only agrees with your preconceived ideas of the world?

yep..

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

What does that have to do with the amount of false news you've posted, example:

Blatant falsity made up by the right wing blogosphere.

Another:

Blatant lie, actually originally made up by Ann Coulter.

And lets not forget the main source you use is hotair, which is absolutely worthless.

But you live by your own rules.

Both are absolutely true.

I find it unsurprising that you would defend a nazi collaborator and a convicted criminal.

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

Both are absolutely true.

Absolutely false.

You have absolutely no credibility on the subject, nor do you have credible sources on the subject.

Why do you love nazis?

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

Your second paragraph: the study looked at news on Facebook, not on their websites. It compared like/share/comment levels for legit and bogus sources, and found more activity for bogus stories.

This is what was written in the report.

The report compared fake news from hoax sites and hyper-partisan blogs to legitimate new articles from 19 major news outlets, including the New York Times, Fox News and even CBS News, reports CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan.

Again, given the quantity of fake news from the New York Times, and others, how did the researchers determine what was legitimate versus the fake news from what they describe as hoax sites?

Also, do like/shared clicks equate to agreement with the reported news?

Thousands of biased, out of context and deceitful news stories were generated by MSM outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, etc., etc.. Did this research dive into the impact of those stories? Journalists recognized and admitted they were falling over each other with extreme bias in their reporting. Where does that fit in to this report?

My problem is this research is suggesting these fake news stories could have swayed the election, apparently towards Trump. How does that compare to the fake news generated by the so called legitimate news sources, and how those stories could have swayed the election towards Clinton?

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

Wing nuts getting their news from FB memes, nothing to see here folks.

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

speaking of fake news stories...... what about TRUMP WINS ELECTORAL COLLEGE?

When is that going to be exposed?

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

What standard will be used to determine what "fake news" is?

Whether the story is actually true or not?

You know, like Powell's antics at the UN all those years ago. Like fake uranium stories from Niger? Like the Legend Of Abbottabad? Gulf Of Tonkin? 911 and Santa Barbara? MH17?

But wait, by even mentioning those bull**** stories, I might have strayed into the forbidden land of CT. ;) Heaven Forbid!!

Translation:
Anything bad that happens in the world and isn't reported as the fault of the ebil US govt is a fake news story.

Sounded to me more like things that didn't happen, yet were reported as if they had.
You know, stories made up and then believed.

The Gulf of Tonkien and uranium from Niger stories were particularly damaging.

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

Given how uninformed many people appear to be, it's certainly possible to sway opinion.

One problem I have with the study though is that it compared news on Facebook with news from the likes of the New York Times and CBS. Considering how discredited both of those sources are, how do they tell which ones are fake?

lol who has debunked the NYT and CBS?

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

lol who has debunked the NYT and CBS?

Who? Really?

For example, when the NYT own journalists write Op-Eds explaining their bias and efforts, I'd say they outed themselves.

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

BuzzFeed News said during the last three months of the presidential campaign, of the top 20 fake election-related articles on Facebook, all but three were all anti-Clinton or pro-Trump. And Facebook users engaged with them using a share, a like or a comment more than 8.7 million times.
Wow. I'm so surprised. :coffeepap

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

What sources do you read? We can start there.

Is this another case of, "if I don't like it, it's a lie"?

There's a big difference between "outright false" and writing something with an agenda. A website can write attack pieces on Clinton all day long or glorifying news on Trump all day long, and as long as it's true that's perfectly fine. It might affect how the audience sees them in terms of being fair, but it's perfectly fine. The problem here is that these stories were blatantly and provably false.

So your reply of "But the NYT is biased!" isn't an actual substantive response to "facebook is full of fake news stories."

Re: Fake news stories and headlines on social media

Is this another case of, "if I don't like it, it's a lie"?

Facebook fake news creator claims he put Trump in White House - CBS News

He is the man behind such viral headlines as ... “President Obama Signs Executive Order Banning the National Anthem at all Sporting Events Nationwide”

If you can't understand how the above headline is false then you have very serious issues that need to be addressed.

How was Powell's UN speech fake news? Are you saying he didn't make the speech? Are you saying that 9-11 and the Gulf of Tonkin incident didn't happen? And yes, Iraq was negotiating with Niger to buy uranium. So, where's the, "fake news"?
