Should religions be allowed to tell us which way we dress?

In America, we have the Pentecostal protestant faith.

They have strict guidelines as to what women can wear. They forbid makeup, for example.

The Amish and the Mennonites have a strict dress code as well.

You don't have to belong to those faiths, if you don't want to.

I believe in the absolute right to sovereignty over one's own body, so from a legal standpoint the religious can wear whatever they want, that's their freedom.

From a more personal standpoint I think it's beyond ridiculous to claim that the almighty creator of the universe desperately cares about your clothing choices and I judge people negatively who believe that.

Should religions be allowed to tell us which way we dress?

Answer is no, Constitutionally a problem to even suggest it.

That is no answer to the question.

Sure it is. If you don't like a religion's restrictioms, you don't have to follow that religion (here in the West anyway). If you choose to follow a religion and they have restrictions on clothes, you choose those restrictions for yourself.

I don't see how or why you would stop it. I would not want to stop people from doing as they see fit.

It's only a problem Constitutionally if you force those restrictions on others. In terms of the Constitution, you can choose your religion. If your religion has these restrictions, that's your choice to follow them.

I hear you, but that is not how I interpreted the OP's question.

I was not aware that religions do this. But, if they do, I oppose the idea.

Come to think of it...I was aware.

Exactly! :)

Your Bible trained conscience should tell you how to dress...

Just leave me alone with your useless advice ...
I did not ask you for advice.

If people volutarily belong to religious groups who set standards for modesty, that's their choice and their decision.

Guess that means you don't have one...figures...

Most people understand the phrase "bible trained conscience" as a euphemism for brainwashing or indoctrination.

make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure.

Religious indoctrination is emotional abuse. Religious beliefs should be banned for children until they are 18 and over and able to make their own decision instead of having that indoctrination forced on them at a young age when they don't understand what is going on.

RELIGIOUS TRAUMA SYNDROME
Article 3 of 3 by Dr Marlene Winell

Understanding Religious Trauma Syndrome: Trauma from Leaving Religion

Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is a function of both the chronic abuses of harmful religion and the impact of severing one’s connection with one’s faith and faith community. It can be compared to a combination of PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). In the last article of this series, I explained some of the toxic aspects of authoritarian religions that cause long-term psychological damage (Bible-based ones in particular). In this writing, I will address the trauma of breaking away from this kind of religion.

With PTSD, a traumatic event is one in which a person experiences or witnesses actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others. Losing one’s faith, or leaving one’s religion, is an analogous event because it essentially means the death of one’s previous life – the end of reality as it was understood. It is a huge shock to the system, and one that needs to be recognized as trauma.

I don't follow you. How can a religion tell us how to dress? What do you mean by "us"? Do you mean members of the religion, or everyone else?

You have never heard of Burqa or Niqab? :doh:confused::roll:

I don't have to wear those, so the religion is not telling us how to dress.

Go on sleeping in your cloud-cuckoo-land

Are you wearing one, or any particular clothing because of what some religion says? Are you afraid of what they will do to you?
