An interesting background on the origin of the belief in an immortal soul...it seems to have originated with Greek philosophy/paganism...the Israelite nation did not believe in the immortal soul...

The early Hebrews apparently had a concept of the soul but did not separate it from the body, although later Jewish writers developed the idea of the soul further. Biblical references to the soul are related to the concept of breath and establish no distinction between the ethereal soul and the corporeal body. Christian concepts of a body-soul dichotomy originated with the ancient Greeks and were introduced into Christian theology at an early date by St. Gregory of Nyssa and by St. Augustine.

Ancient Greek concepts of the soul varied considerably according to the particular era and philosophical school. The Epicureans considered the soul to be made up of atoms like the rest of the body. For the Platonists, the soul was an immaterial and incorporeal substance, akin to the gods yet part of the world of change and becoming. Aristotle’s conception of the soul was obscure, though he did state that it was a form inseparable from the body.

I believe a soul, a spirit, is the influence a person has on the world and thus into the future. It's what continues on about us after our physical self passes.

I think Solomon also expressed that best...everyone is forgotten with time...

"For there is no lasting memory either of the wise one or of the stupid one. In the days to come, everyone will be forgotten. And how will the wise one die? Along with the stupid one." Ecclesiastes 2:16

What is your position in this matter?

Love is like the butterfly effect or a drop in the ocean that joins never-ending waves. It goes on, joining and fragmenting like the atoms around us. To walk with the Spirit is to live forever in some small way.

Evil is distasteful and discarded. It's tossed into an incinerator until it effectively is no more. Do to evil is to cast one's soul into a furnace.

To do good is to live forever.

Exactly what the Bible says..."The soul who sins is the one who will die." Ezekiel 18:4

And yet, when you die, all the goodness you did can be destroyed with the next generation...

Things always get better and my love will forever be a part of it. When someone looks around one day, millions of years from now, and there's no evil, I'll be with them.

Nice poetic thoughts, but sadly, not reality...

I think of the soul as the sum total of an individual's ego, experiences, and knowledge, or basically their personality.

The soul goes to sleep in this world but since time and space stops for that person, they join the eternal now upon passing.

Sin, merely, means 'human error' or lack of knowledge to know better. Since, all sin, all will be forgiven, or none will. Life's not about judgment and punishment, it's about learning and appreciation. We are corrected on earth, not afterwards.

It's scientific fact.

1. My influence continues after my physical death.
2. The world has always gotten better with time.

My influence will be a part of a better world. In some way, I'll be there even long after I'm forgotten.

I don't agree...the world/society has never been worse, in more ways than one..

In the long run, the world improves socially. That's not up for debate. Is there any other aspect of my claims to which you object?

We lived under anarchy then kings then democracy. Nations become more free every day, sometimes one joins the free world. People have gone from property to a voice in their authority.

To pretend the world degenerates socially with passing generations is blind pessimism.

As opposed to your blind optimism. Maybe neither thing is true and reality doesn't conform to feel good or feel bad beliefs at all.

I employ the available evidence, world history, to draw the logical conclusion. I don't understand why that bothers you.

And yet, we cannot eradicate disease, suffering, and death...or hatred, racism, and war...go figure...

That's just it...you do not have that much time available...

You employ your personal made up belief based on your emotions. There is no logic behind your beliefs.

World history is not "made up beliefs". Logic is to employ that history in drawing conclusions about the future.

Exactly what the Bible says..."The soul who sins is the one who will die." Ezekiel 18:4

This is true...it is also true that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” therefore all must die. Christians get confused when they make soul synonymous with spirit. The soul is corruptible whearas the spirit is incorruptible....therefore the soul must die...it is not immortal. I Isaiah 53:12...”because he hath poured out his soul unto death”...I.e. Christ put his soul to death. We must do likewise. To save our life we must lose it(Mark 8:35)...Wes lose our life(soul) to gain life(Spirit). Hebrews 4:12 speaks of dividing soul and spirit....these means spirit is distinct from soul. The soul with all its components can be a detriment to hearing the small still voice of God(the Spirit)

See Peter 1:22-23.# s it speaks of purifying the soul, indicating that the soul is corruptible. The means of this purification was the Spirit through being born again. When that is purified it is no longer an impediment to eternal life.
