Which of the names do you know? :)

Personally, I like Bernard.

90

Now that is a saint.

Personally, I like Bernard.

Now that is a saint.

That is correct! :)
And here are his names in other languages: St. Bernhardshund, Chien du Saint-Bernard, Saint Bernard Dog, Perro San Bernardo
And yes, Saint Bernard is both a mountain and a Saint. :)

Here is what I remember on short notice.

Andrew (Greek: Andreia i.e. "Valor"), called Protokletos ("the first called") by the early Church.
The disciple who told Jesus about the bread and the fish, and one of the four who joined him on the mountain. When martyred, supposedly asked to be crucified on a different type of cross, as he did not consider himself worthy for the same type of cross as Jesus, hence the St. Andrews Cross (can be see on the Scottish flag among others).

Peter (Greek: Petros i.e. "Rock"), obviously.
The first Bishop of Rome and brother to Andrew.

Apollonia (From Greek "Apollon", the god of medicine, healing, and the sun. May possibly mean "Master of the Assembly".) of Alexandria.
Her teeth were knocked out when she was martyred, so she is the patron saint of dentists.

Kristo-forus (i.e. "Christ-bearer").
Refused to serve any but the mightiest lord, but was humbled by Christ and converted. Patron saint of Pilgrims. Very popular in Tyrolia, probably because of the passes though the Alps, that were used by many Pilgrims.

Agathe (Greek: "Kind") of Sicily.
Was burned with red hot coals and had breasts torn off with tongs, so she is the patron saint who wards diseases of the breasts and lightning strikes.

Vitus (Latin: "Lively"), also of Sicily, whom I've mentioned before.
A young boy who was boiled in lead. Often depicted with the instrument of his demise, which looks like a potty, so eventually became the patron saint of bedwetters.

Lawrence (Latin: Laurentius. Very old name that supposedly means "Laurelled" or "Leader of men" (same thing)), Deacon of Rome.
Gave the Church funds to the poor, before they could be seized by the Emperor. Roasted on a grill for this trouble. Patron saint of the poor and fire fighters.

Barbara (from Greek "Barbaros" i.e. barbarian/stranger) of Nicomedia.
Burned with torches and decapitated for disobeying her father (refusing to recant her Christianity). Invoked against burn wounds, artillery malfunctions, and lightning strikes.

Cecilia (Latin: "Caecilius" i.e. "Blind) and Valerian (Latin: "Strength" or "Health").
Martyred for staying virgins after marriage. No blood on the sheets. Angry pagan parents. Cecilia was decapitated and is the patron saint of musicians, as she sang in her heart to the Lord when she kept her wow of chastity.

Dyonisius (Dyaus-Nysa, God of wine and a cthonic aspect of Zeus (Zeus = Dyaus aka Dyaus-Piter/Jupiter). Meaning of "Nysa" is unknown, but may refer to a mountain), Bishop of Paris.
His executioner missed the blow, and he was forced to walk to the cemetary with his brains visible. Invoked against headaches.

Sebastian (Greek: "Person from Sebastia").
Shot with arrows but survived, so he was beaten to death with clubs. Invoked against disease (the arrows of Apollo).

Erasmus (Greek: "Erasmios" i.e. Beloved), Bishop of Antioch.
Nails torn off, boiled, and finally disembowelled. Invoked against choleric diseases of the stomach. Also the patron saint of sailors (and St. Elmos fire).

Cosmas (Greek: "Kosmos" i.e. order) and Damianus (Greek: "Damazo" i.e. to tame).
A couple of Arab twin doctors who cured the sick for free. Complaints were made, and they were executed. Patron saints of physicians.

Peter, Paul, and Mary should be better known. :)

Back in the mid 70's, I was visiting a sound studio with my father, who had some business there (the sound tech was running for political office), and I saw Mary Travers recording for an album.

Which of the names do you know? :)

All those and many many more. I needed to know them, and what they were patron saints of, to survive in Medieval Germany. :)

"Saints", translate to "Lesser Gods"

I like "Aphrodite", ooops,.... wrong cult.

Did you live then and there? :)

Indeed. It's very dated, from the time of 386's, but it does a wonderful job of presenting historical Medieval Germany.

Here are the "A's" alone. The numbers in square brackets represent the religious knowledge necessary to call upon the Saint, and odds that the Saint will answer your prayers. The numbers in the round brackets are the "buffs," ie how that saint helps you if they answer your prayers.

Do you know the Fourteen Holy Helpers? :)

The Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism because their intercession is believed to be particularly effective, especially against various diseases. This group of Nothelfer ("helpers in need") originated in the 14th century at first in the Rhineland, largely as a result of the epidemic (probably of bubonic plague) that became known as the Black Death.

Saint Jimmy.

Saint Margaret with the dragon
Saint Barbara with the tower
Saint Catherine with the wheel
those are the three holy maids.

And here the original:

Sankt Margaretha mit dem Wurm,
Sankt Barbara mit dem Turm,
Sankt Catharina mit dem Radl,
das sind die heiligen drei Madl.

Those are the THREE HOLY MAIDS.
