    Street Preachers

So, today there's a group of street preachers that showed up on campus today. They are still there (been there for hours apparently), and a bunch of students circled around them, so they can't yell at everyone that passes by. I got out of class today to see what was up with it, 'cause friends told me about it. It's a bunch of old people with signs that say stuff like, "Ask me why you're going to hell" They were also yelling stuff about women, calling us stuff like 'sluts' and 'whores' and telling us we're going to hell because we have periods. How dare women have their own bodily functions! In short, it's crazy stuff. From what I've gathered, one of them got escorted off. This isn't the first time I've seen street preachers on campus, and most of the time I roll my eyes and ignore them. I've only said stuff a few times, and that was like "**** off" and "my soul's just fine, pal".

It got me to thinking, what do they think they gain by yelling at all of us like they do? A smug sense of superiority? Being sucked into religous dogma? They know absolutely nothing about any of us, yet they feel they have some right to call us 'sluts', 'whores' and 'degenerates'. It's so stupid.

I'm guessing they were banned from DebatePolitics.

They probably gain the same thing you gained by telling them to **** off I would imagine.

I completely agree and have never understood the value of it. It is as idiotic a gesture as are the bigoted anti-religious threads on this site...and yet...it is a constant.

    Tragic.

That sort of thing has been going on for decades. It's fairly humorous. They ain't gonna change anyone, no one will change them, but everyone gets the right to run their mouths. I never really engaged with those sorts of groups, nor saw the point in doing so. Whenever I saw people spending considerable time arguing or whatever with them, I always thought "don't you have homework to be doing?".

They have no life or a miserable one and get their only comfort by demeaning others. Or mental illness. Probably both. Best to stay far away. They might decide death is better and try and take you with them.

I don't see the point in debating them, either. It's usually just one-off comments from me, 'cause I'm basically addressing a brick wall of bigotry.

Pretty much. I don't particularly know what they think they're going to gain, or if it's just something they feel they have to do because of whatever religious sect they belong to. But I imagine this sort of thing shall continue for quite some time. Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly....

Sounds like a modern version of those Scottish hellfire sermons.
