Flying Spaghetti Monster - Wikipedia

The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Pastafarianism. Pastafarianism (a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarianism) is a social movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion and opposes the teaching of intelligent design and creationism in public schools. According to adherents, Pastafarianism is a "real, legitimate religion, as much as any other".[3] In New Zealand, Pastafarian representatives are authorized to officiate weddings.[4][5][6] However, in the United States, a federal court has ruled that the "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" is not a real religion.[7] In August 2018 the Dutch Council of State also ruled that Pastafarianism is not a religion.[8]

The "Flying Spaghetti Monster" was first described in a satirical open letter written by Bobby Henderson in 2005 to protest the Kansas State Board of Education decision to permit teaching intelligent design as an alternative to evolution in public school science classes.[9] In the letter, Henderson demanded equal time in science classrooms for "Flying Spaghetti Monsterism", alongside intelligent design and evolution.[10] After Henderson published the letter on his website, the Flying Spaghetti Monster rapidly became an Internet phenomenon and a symbol of opposition to the teaching of intelligent design in public schools.[11]

My wife served me communion this evening: a plate of spaghetti with Italian (not Vatican) sausages.

Not theology.

Their Holy Book is called, "The Loose Canon"? :lamo

And here is the Pastafarian Prayer:

Our pasta, who art in a colander, draining be your noodles. Thy noodle come, Thy sauce be yum, on top some grated Parmesan. Give us this day, our garlic bread, …and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trample on our lawns. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us some pizza, for thine is the meatball, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever. R’amen.

We are not in the theology forum

We were. I know the thread doesn't show as moved, but I know what I saw and I'd be happy to bet donations.

Were we? Then maybe this thread is some kind of werewolf?

Let's bet. $20 (forum donation) says this thread started in Theology.

You're gonna run.

Not theology.

OK, this is kind of a quibble, and I realize that the church of the FSM is kind of a joke, but still I think you're treading on dangerous ground by labeling it as "Not theology".
As ridiculous as the church of the FSM is, who is to say that if we allow people to dictate what is and isn't a valid religion, that they won't go after other religions. I think there are aspects of just about every religion to be ridiculous. I'm sure that most believers on this board view aspects of religions that they don't believe in as being ridiculous. Would it really be in their best interest to have another person's beliefs be called, "Not theology"? Couldn't the same happen to their religion?

I don't know...just something to think about.

Spaghetti is not metaphysics, it's politics. Its purpose is different.

Oh so now religion never has anything to do with politics? :lamo

Does Billy Graham Jr know that?

Oh so now religion has nothing to do with politics? :lamo

I claimed no such thing. I claim that metaphysics and politics are two different purposes. Metaphysics seeks to explain the unknowable. Spaghetti does no such thing.

So how is the metaphysics of the FSM different than any other metaphysics?

Wouldn't that depend on knowing what the believers believe?

We know that. We known what they believe. No one actually worships Spaghetti.

I don't wanna play stupid.

Well, I'll admit that it's probably a safe bet.
It just doesn't set well with me when the government, or anyone else for that matter, is the arbiter of that.
It would be like Christian, or Muslim, or Jewish or whatever, extremists in the government deciding that this or that religion doesn't deserve to be non-taxed because they don't believe that religion to be valid.

Wish we'd outlaw Scientology like Europe.
