Root of Humanity's Belief in Evil Possibly Found | Live Science

Disease may be the root of all evil.

Where did the spiritual concept of evil originate? One possible explanation might be people's attempts to understand and cope with infectious diseases.

Linking diseases and their symptoms to mysterious evil forces is a practice that emerged in traditional belief systems prior to the mid-19th century, when germ theory was introduced, scientists wrote in a new study. Germ theory revealed that microscopic pathogens, rather than malevolent spirits, were the cause of illness.

If you can't understand what is making you or your kin ill, why not blame it on some nasty evil thingy?

This may be the dumbest thing I've seen on this website.

I read your thread title without putting reading glasses on and I read "Root of Hannity's Belief in Evil Possibly Found"

lol...the Bible stated that fact long ago...not disease exactly, but sin, which causes disease, old age, and death...

"That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because they had all sinned." Romans 5:12

Seriously?

Yes. The concepts of good and bad are known even to small children. The idea that we've "discovered" the historical origins of those concepts is prima facie absurd.

I think it is more of an evolutionary origin rather than an historical origin. And if that is the stupidest thing you've read on these forums after nearly 1500 posts, I question your definition of "stupid."

Claiming that the concepts of good and evil are a way of coping with disease is profoundly unreflective.

Admittedly, I did hesitate before posting that. But I thought about it for a bit and couldn't think of anything on here that would beat this.

Really? How do children know this? Why do we raise children, train them, teach them? And children learn by watching others. Nothing is built in about concepts of good and evil.

No, coping with disease was the root of developing the concepts of good and evil.

"Evil" is that which runs counter to the collective long-term survival of our species.

This may be the best example of Dunning Kruger I've seen on this website.

Exactly. According to the law at one time, it was acceptable to kill a man because he picked up a stick on the wrong day of the week.

It's the night gases. Killed millions.

Well ain't that a kick in the butt. A god that created me with original sin only to die a diseased old age death. That's cruel.

Not when He made a way out... Jesus Christ...

What is dying when you are given the promise of living again?

Sorry but I don't hold that belief. I prefer to go with once you're dead, you're dead. A promise from an imaginary figure doesn't do much for me.

What's there to lose?

What's there to lose?

I seem to recall hearing that from our now president when he was a candidate. Now we know what's to lose, your soul and entire country.

I prefer to live my life with what I can see, feel and hear, not imaginary figures making me promises. I don't need a religion or a belief in any god to know the difference between right and wrong for me.

Your choice so don't blame God for your outcome...
