Whadaya think? Does old Bob know what he's talkin' about or is he just blowin' in the wind? Is there anyway of gettin' outta servin' somebody? Can a person be neutral? True or false? Why or why not?

You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage
You may be a business man or some high-degree thief
They may call you doctor or they may call you chief
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say
Still, you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody

Technically, the only person you gotta serve is yourself, and even then there's plenty of people who are so self-destructive for a variety of reasons that's not even a given.

I feel I need to serve my spouse and kids.
When my parents were alive I felt the need to serve them.

As an employee who wishes to stay employed, I gotta serve my employer.

Lower on the priority scale is serving my immediate community. Then lower is the larger community.
Taking care of my property, not breaking laws, paying taxes, and harming nobody. That kind of thing.

If you're talking about "god" in any shape or form - then ..... well, you obviously know my position on that.

I contend without any fear at all that if there's an after-life of some sort, and a deity (or deities) that presides over it, that I'll be just fine in that deity's "eyes" and welcomed into that realm with open arms and perhaps the best beer I've ever tasted.

Gotta Serve Somebody is an awful Dylan song.

That's why, SELF, is the modern-day equivalent of idolatry.

Yes, it is and it proves we all serve somebody, if it's no more than self, which in reality, is Satan...he's the prime example of selfishness, self serving...he started it...old Bobby is right...

Thank you!

Dylan fell off a creative cliff in the mid-late 70's.

How people can but his albums for the last 40 years is something I'll never understand.

Blonde On Blonde was his high point, Blood On The Tracks was a very good effort but since then?

Blood on the Tracts was released in 1975 and yes, it was his last great work.

That said, I did enjoy his 1979 release, At Budokan which reworked his most excellent catalog.

Blonde on Blonde, one of the 10 best albums ever recorded. :)

I love me, I love me
I'm mad about myself
I love me, I love me
My photo's on my shelf
You might not think that I look good
But I think I look fine
I'm so proud and happy
Just to know that I'm all mine
I love me, I love me
I'm mad about sweet me
I love me, I love me
I'm perfect company
When evening comes
On go the lights
I walk myself home every night
And sleep with me
Till broad daylight
I'm mad about myself

you have to serve yourself a god or a devil would need to ask something of you for you to be able to choose to serve them so i cant serve either of them in that way

i suppose you could be acting in the interest of 1 or both of them depending on what they want but if they wont tell you what they want you would not know

or they could not exist so you cant serve either and you only serve the interests of other people knowingly or incidentally depending on what other people want of course its possible the things you do are not wanted by anyone else

That's why, SELF, is the modern-day equivalent of idolatry.

any god that minds should not create individuals with a will of ther own because they have no choice but to work of themselves its the source of all your motivation

not to say you cant work for the sake of others to but you would only do that if in some way it pleases you

you have not shown satna to be a reality

( should have been satan but same difference so im leaving it )

how do you not serve yourself and how could that be good since good also depends on what you like

Ah yes, Dylan’s problematic and temporary “Gospel” period. It may not have been popular, but he certainly had a great backing band. All artists go thru phases; I’ve never understood why so many were so skeptical of his gospel phase. It was more or less a product of the times. What really was his undoing at the time though was choosing to completely discard all his previous material, and only performing the new gospel material at live performances. But yes, he makes an interesting point with this song. We’re all serving something. Even nihilists, who claim to reject all values, themselves embrace nihilism. Cool post, and was a pretty cool song for that particular phase of his. I pretty much stopped collecting his material after Blood on the Tracks, but I do recollect listening to a couple of these gospel albums of his shortly after they were released.

Poetic, but not necessarily true. Unless you are taking about a cookbook

Oh, sister, when I come to lie in your arms
You should not treat me like a stranger
Our Father would not like the way that you act
And you must realize the danger-Dylan

So god will be angry if a woman refuses my advances? I've never tried that one.
