This is a question for any atheists out there who once were part of a religion or what ever.

I never believed in any god so it has always been astounding to me that others could do so. I see very strong evidence in any(well, almost) of the regular religious types who engage in these debates that they don't really believe.

But just in case I am wrong can you tell me if you ever really believed in it any how that worked?

I've been a skeptic for as long as I can remember. Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran. None of it passes the smell test for me personally. I eventually, around the age of 15 or so, came to the conclusion man had concocted God concepts for various reasons. The threat of hellfire for eternity simply because I didn't believe the content of the holy text was really never an issue. Once I got past that, critical thinking became my primary source for discernment.

I've come to the realization that a great many atheists have a screw loose, especially the ones who hang around religious threads wasting time trying to convince Christians that their religious beliefs are bogus. The atheist's end game is being cast into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8) as a reward for their monumental stupidity.

I remember praying before bed when I was five or six, and if I forgot or skipped it, I’d freak out about boogiemen. So, I’d hurry one out when I remembered again. But, by the time I started listening to the radio while going to sleep, I quit doing it.

I have no idea what age I was when I figured out all the god stuff was bull****. It probably happened by ten or 11. But I’m still more agnostic than atheist.

I know that as far as the eye can see—and the “eye” today can see very far—there is no god. But I have no idea what lies beyond. I know there’s no Jesus and saints or other weird crap like divine miracles, but there could be something or not way out there that we can’t get our arms around.

I doubt that thing is a god though. At least, I’m sure it’s not sky daddy who is watching if we are naughty or nice like ****ing Santa Claus.

Yes, believing the Jesus man was god is silly. People really should come to terms with that.

About my seventh or eighth year of catholic school I think I had enough.

Well, growingvup, God was a given...a basic assumption. But it never made that much sense to me. As I grew older it started making less and less sense. And it always seemed odd to me that Christians so easily dismissed the Greek, Norse, Babylonian, etc. gods as myth but their own stories as clearly true.

So while I believed when I was young, it wasn’t critical belief, so I don’t think it could be said I really believed.

Why do think atheists should be concerned about that any more than you are concerned with the results of Anubis weighing your heart against a feather?

ROTFLMAO

I am not sure if this is meant to be humorist, as I took it, or serious because I suspect some extremists believe wild stuff like this.

Once I was old enough to study and understand other myths, it became clear that the only gods which "exist" are the ones filling gaps. That's probably why I am still agnostic. In a symbolic way, gods do exist, if you know what I mean.

Just wondering why and don't want to derail this thread. https://www.debatepolitics.com/reli...=jc+callender+why+would+someone+make+up+jesus

The story of Jesus is very redeeming. What's not to like? Act right, give fealty and you go to heaven.

Of course, once you understand neuroscience, and come to realize that our behavior is often beyond our immediate control--especially for those with injuries or defects of the pre-frontal cortex--it no longer makes sense. But, on the surface, Christianity gives hope. So, of course it would sell back in the days of Rome and the almighty Pope.

I did. It was more or a desire to believe than valid reasons to believe (as in evidence). Plus it helped growing up in the rural bible belt.

I'm glad most people are more tolerant now. I think as more people gain exposure to other cultures, beliefs, etc. from all around the world, even different regions of their own country, they realize that other people just don't believe the way they do and that is OK. As an atheist who was a big time believer at one time, I am tolerant of christians as well as those in all religions (or none). They can go around and believe anything they want up until the point it infringes on the rights of others.

I tend to agree. No rational adult can possibly believe in this "lake of fire" bull****.

You think he was serious?

Oh my.

I think I had been a DP member for about i/2 hour before I posted I was non-religious ( not anti-religious ) before LogicMan chimed in and informed me I would burn in hell for eternity, simply because my beliefs didn't jive with his beliefs.

elvira hear on the other hand is just waiting for every one who wont submit to her god to be killed off forever

after they are given that ultimatum from god in person if i recall correctly

People who choose to serve Jehovah will be in a position to receive everlasting life. But, even under these best of circumstances, some will refuse to serve God. As the Scriptures say: “Though the wicked one should be shown favor, he simply will not learn righteousness. In the land of straightforwardness he will act unjustly.” (Isaiah 26:10) So after being given full opportunity to change their ways and to learn righteousness, such wicked ones will be destroyed. Some will be put to death even before Judgment Day ends. (Isaiah 65:20) They will not be permitted to remain to corrupt or spoil the paradise earth.

no my mistake it will be jesus and his posse

It is under such paradise conditions that Jesus Christ and his 144,000 associate kings will judge humankind.
