Officials to kill thousands of camels in Australia as they drink too much water amid wildfires | TheHill

Officials will kill thousands of camels in Australia as they drink too much water amid the wildfires.

Leaders in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in northwest Australia will send helicopters to kill up to 10,000 camels in a five-day campaign starting Wednesday, The Australian reported. The order to kill comes as a drought makes the camels more desperate for water, causing chaos in local communities.

You do realize that several people have been arrested for starting the fires, right?

Pretty soon, we won't have to worry about Mexican immigrants so much anymore. It will be the Aussies who will be trying to sneak across the border to get in.

What does this have to do with "global warming"? The simple act of transporting an invasive species to the continent and allowing them to multiply into the millions has had a far more devastating impact on the native ecosystem than "global warming".

Hopefully they will do a better job then they did with the emu.

Pretty dumb response over all. But specially since we are talking the north west region. Most of fires are located in the south east part of country. And according to climate change scientists the northern half of the state should receive more and more rain fall.

Exotic invasives is the one environmental issue the alt-right is interested in.

Are you talking about rabbits since we are talking about Australia

Rainfall so far has been counterproductive as it inhibits deliberately set backfires.

My first pick would be domestic, feral, cats. I don't think it can be beat, but maybe. Perhaps a EI starfish, if such a thing exists. I doubt anything terrestrial is worse. Mussels can be horrible. I dunno much about their marine ecology.

No, if you read the OP and the article, you would know that the subject is camels.

I didn't get your connection to invasive.
Horses are not native to North America but yet there are millions but we don't call them invasive.

Actually it was, they migrated across the land bridge and disappeared until reintroduced by the Spaniards.

As to invasive species: A species is regarded as invasive if it has been introduced by human action to a location, area, or region where it did not previously occur naturally.

This link lists all known in North America. List of invasive species in North America - Wikipedia

Horses originated and evolved in North America, existing here long before the first "Native Americans" arrived and began to hunt them.

Those existing today are descended from populations that spread into Europe, brought by explorers who reintroduced the horse to this continent.

Of the millions of horses that exist here today, only a very small proportion are wild - nevertheless, many people and organizations do in fact call them an "invasive species".

I guarantee you that their voices would be much louder if horses were as much a nuisance as camels, with a population 35 times greater than what we currently have, and no predators to stop them from destroying the ecosystem.

How large is the population of camel? From what I read they are estimated at 300,000.
Their are just as many feral horses in Australia as camels, and almost as many water buffalo its around 150,000. Why do they not call for these animals as well?

The camel population is currently at 1.2 million and rising fast. If not for the constant culling efforts, that number would be much larger.

Feral camels Australia: Population estimated to be at 1.2 million and growing fast

That's double or triple the feral horse population.

Nonetheless, feral horses are also a problem being addressed. They are currently trapped and sterilized or trapped and adopted by owners. But these programs are not working well enough and calls for aerial culling are being made. See for example this recent article from the journal of Ecological Management and Restoration:

Modelling and decades of management experience indicate that trapping alone does not control feral horse numbers. Trapping and fertility control can work in small populations, but not when there are several thousand horses in remote areas. Aerial culling is needed to cost‐effectively and humanely control feral horse populations.
