14,000 kangaroos a year to be shot for pet food as drought hits Australia | World | The Times

Tens of thousands of kangaroos will be shot and turned into pet food under a plan to manage the population and stop the animals invading farmlands as they flee Australia’s drought.

The southeastern state of Victoria announced today that accredited shooters will be allowed to harvest the animals and sell their carcasses to pet food companies.

I caught a but about 'roos on a nature program last night. Due to the extreme heat & arrid conditions in Australia, the cool themselves by licking their fur to moisten it. The evaporating moisture cools their hides. They have therefore become a major pest to farmers as they seek sources of moisture.

Oh man, this is weird to see on the front page of the new posts because I just watched "Wake in Fright." There's a kangaroo hunting scene that is absolutely abhorrent. What an awful, sad situation.

I live in Australia.....Near Bendigo, Victoria......The Kangaroos here are everywhere. You can't drive a country road without seeing the occasional Roo carcass every few kilometers (smaller than a mile.....60 MPH = 100 KPH) ...... they are hit by cars & trucks all the time, & they usually lose the battle (they have absolutely no road sense), but they can really make a mess out of your car. If they come through your windshield at 100 KPH (called windscreen down here) they can kill you, or cause you to have a nasty accident....hit a tree....or another car....God forbid a truck! Most accidents with Roos end up badly for the Roo.

Now that said, they breed like rabbits, & the population is in the millions Australia wide.....so they are quite far from being an endangered species.

They make decent fare....a bit rich tasting, but very lean. They taste somewhat gamey....quite rich & distinct in flavor....how you cook & season it will affect the outcome.

I agree with culling.......I'd rather see 50 Roos shot by shooters, than one or two dead from thirst & starvation!!!

The scene in Wake in Fright where they eat kangaroo on bread is absolutely disgusting. They eat squirrels in Michigan and cats in plenty of countries. So I won't judge. But have you seen that movie? A bunch of drunk bogans driving around just slaughtering the animals and laughing at the brutality of it? It's haunting. Fully sick boys they are.

Bring some cougars or leopards over from the US or Africa, they will control the Kangaroo population

Is it better to let tens of thousands of kangaroos to die in the heat and of starvation? This is exactly what would happen to deer in the US if hunting were outlawed. Hunting is controlled to manage the herd size to prevent massive death from starvation due to overpopulation.

It may be shocking to non-hunters or people who like their meat on a Styrofoam tray with a plastic wrapper, but if you go to a slaughter house and watch them kill cattle and hogs with machinery maybe you'd have a better understanding of reality.

Not seen the movie, but I could imagine it......& yes, there are a lot of sick bastards here down-under. No excuse for cruelty, but simple minds are the devil's workshop. Such is life......there are all kinds.

Well if the wolf population was allowed to grow, they would take care of the deer population keeping it in check

Which brings up the old story of controlling mice with cats, then cats with dogs, then having to hunt down the dogs. Better, IMO, to do exactly what they are doing. Open Season in areas where the kangaroos need to be controlled then make such hunting both seasonal and controlled. In some areas of the US, there's open season on some animal groups, closed on others and a controlled drawing for others. There are numerous means for Wildlife Conservationists to control animal populations in the most humane way possible.

If the kangaroo meat could be artfully processed and seasoned, perhaps it could be distributed to refugee camps throughout the world.

Yeah bruh I'm vegan. Animals are sentient beings and I have a pretty good understanding of reality. As to your question, I don't have an answer, nor did I condemn hunting. I said that a scene in Wake in Fright depicts a bunch of bogans go around taking pleasure in the killing of kangaroos. Brutal, ugly violence. One of the crew members vomited he was so appalled and I would give you a thousand to one odds he ate meat. Either we don't really disagree about anything other than what is and isn't moral to eat (and I don't care what other people eat) or you're a bogan. In which case, go listen to Cold Chisel.

America has few kangaroos. But good news! AOC has her sights on slaughtering cows for harming the environment and America has plenty of cows for now.

Jerky would be best; no refrigeration needed, longer shelf-life, lighter to cut down transportation costs.

Most people aren't vegans, bruh. Good luck swimming against the stream.

Hey...why not! The Koalas are about to go extinct, so let's make another animal go that way too!

I first learned about "roo-bars" on cars and trucks in Oz back when I was around...oh say, maybe thirteen years old?
(1969-1970)

Now all of sudden, fast forward to the mid-1980's and now it seems every 4X4 truck, every van, even every mini-truck here in the US, even urban vehicles that will never ever see more wilderness than a grocery store suddenly has roo-bars on them but it seems the Aussies were maybe the first to put them on. It was a necessity.
Now here in the USA, it's mostly to show off unless you're looking at a serious outdoorsman.

The 1974 Dodge Tradesman 300 van I bought secondhand had them on the front, and that van used to belong to a local AM radio disk jockey. He had the damn thing set up like a single guy sin bin. He wasn't going to the boondocks, he was searching for skirt! :lamo

I always laugh when folks use the term "gamey". For the most part, it's almost like a negative connotation, I guess.
If I say that to describe venison (which I absolutely love) I can see the women (and some men!) wrinkle up their faces..."ewwwww!".

giphy.gif

So I never use that word anymore. I tell them it tastes like "artisanal" meat should.
Oh wow, like awesome sauce, dude! :lamo

If you tell an average American that they're about to try a rare imported artisanal cut of meat, not only will they gobble it down with aplomb, twenty four hours later they will present themselves as experts on artisanal meats to all their friends.

All you mates have to do is come up with an exotic and interesting sounding synonym for "kangaroo" and you'll have Yanks eating your dog food on a crisp or open faced on "artisanal" sourdough right here in Beverly Hills.

Wiki says that the word has a colorful history! :lamo

The word "kangaroo" derives from the Guugu Yimithirr word gangurru, referring to grey kangaroos.
Or maybe you could call it "New Age Wanburoo" meat?

Cheers mate, hope ya make a million bucks!

Hopefully they will do better than they did against the emu

Emu War - Wikipedia

OMG that was the funniest thing! :lamo

You know, over here we have an insurance company (Liberty Mutual) that has adopted the emu as their mascot, and they've made a series of very funny commercials, about the "LiMu Emu" (...and Doug)

I own a little black dog, (appr. 30 pounds) part Black Labrador and part Greyhound, who has pretty much the personality of this bird, save for the fact that "Betty Boop" has four legs, not two, of course.

Will the pet food be marketed under the name of "Skippy" or will it need a higher wallaby content to legally claim that name. For a jingle, might I suggest:

Skippy, Skippy!
Skippy, the canned kangaroo.
Skippy, Skippy!
Skippy, No other food will do!

Cheers.

Alas we have a brand of peanut butter with that moniker.
I'm quite certain that confusion will reign supreme ;)
