Tokyo (AFP) - Japan's American-written "peace constitution" has survived unchanged for 70 years, but nationalists seeking an overhaul are gearing up for a major new push as concerns grow over North Korean belligerence.
Conservatives have long called for the document they see as a national humiliation to be amended, but current political alignments and growing security concerns suggest they now have their best chance of success.
"The time is ripe," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday in a speech to supporters of change. "We will take a historic step towards the major goal of revising the constitution in this milestone year."
I've been saying for some time that with the situation in East Asia with North Korea, that this was bound to happen. The Japan are ripe for a national change. Much has changed in China and Korea since WWII, and Japan's principle document needs updating.

According to the mail-in survey, which was conducted ahead of Wednesday’s 70th anniversary of the postwar Constitution’s enactment, 49 percent of respondents said Article 9 must be revised while 47 percent oppose such a change.
Japanese sharply divided over revising Article 9 amid regional security threats, poll finds | The Japan Times

This is the first national poll which showed that close to the majority of respondents said Article 9 must be revised. If there is a national referendum in a year, Japan's "peace constitution" would be amended.

This is mostly Abe's doing - that moron.

First he wrecked the economy even more. Now he seems to want to go back to the pre-war days of Japan (not good).

Hey Abe - you dumbass - why don't you get your COMPLETE mess of an economy/national debt under control before you start a new Japanese Empire...idiot.
