Police in Australia have detained five men suspected of planning a series of Christmas Day bomb attacks in the heart of the country's second-largest city, officials said Friday.

The suspects had been inspired by the Islamic State group and planned attacks on Melbourne's Flinders Street train station, neighboring Federation Square and St. Paul's Cathedral, Victoria state Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said.

This stuff is only increasing. It is the sign of the times.

Surprisingly little interest in this story. Had the attack occurred, it would have been quite large and killed perhaps as many as the Nov 2015 Paris attacks.

I know there are Australian posters on the board. Why so little interest?

Australian poster here.

Australians know full well that the threat of terrorism is patently legitimate. That being said, my Government, Law enforcement Officials and Terror watch agencies do a pretty good job of looking out for our best interests as evidenced by the article here. Thank goodness their attempts were thwarted, good job to those involved in the apprehension of them.

As to your "why so little interest" comment, I'll be frank. Whilst you and others may render, almost by definition, terrorism more significant than anything else, the reality is that not all of us fall into a similar category. Everyone needs to understand the risks that extremism can pose and be aware of it and i do, I'm fully aware of it. I'm not interested in creating a climate in which terrorists can achieve the social disruption they seek increasingly easily by constantly talking about extremism as though it's the only problem I may face here.

I said this some time ago in another post

If terrorists were killing one Australian each and every week, a state of national emergency would be declared and there would be no problem with funds being allocated to address the situation. Meanwhile in the real world, I work in the Health care field as a paramedic. Just to use one example, we are increasingly coming into contact with violent ice addicts. It's at critical stages, the worst I have ever experienced. There's not enough funding for rehab programs, these kids are for the most part on their own. Their drug induced psychosis, violence, and erratic behaviour pose significant risks to the public and to those like me just trying to do our jobs.

Understand now? I make no apologies for not placing attempted terrorist attacks above everything else and more worthy of discussion. I'll chime in when I'm aware of a discussion quite happily though and again, good job to those responsible for catching these assholes.

Well said, and thanks for replying. While drugs are undoubtedly killing more people at present, terrorism is an emerging threat that hasn't peaked. Daily bombings and killings in Africa, the Mideast, and Asia point us to our future direction. Australia happens to have very few Muslims within its borders, so it makes sense that ice would be more of a worry currently for a health care professional like yourself.

We're seeing many bizarre drug trends in the U.S., causing similar side effects that you named. Ice, or meth as its known in most American states, was supposedly the scariest drug out there, until the country was flooded by synthetic marijuana and meth from China. Reports of 15 year olds dying from heart attacks, bizarre homicidal psychosis, and just plain bizarre behavior like attacking moving cars in traffic, are some of the things I've seen. Are you experiencing much synthetic drug issues in Australia?

Btw, I give credit to the Australian authorities, they saved the day and are real heroes here. They did a great job uncovering and preventing an attack.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm in Oz, and nobody seems to be talking about this.

Two questions:
1. Will Australians ever elect a bogan?
2. Isn't Wentworth great? So much better than Orange is the New Black.

And good on them for catching the terrorists. But please chime in about the bogans.

Its easy to downplay things and ignore it if the attack is thwarted. Its a lot harder to rush to defend Muslims after Muslims terrorists have successfully managed to kill people.

Not impossible mind you...just more difficult.

And good on the Australian law enforcement agencies for avoiding this one.

Umm, Julia Gillard and Pauline Hanson.
