China says infections spreading as it reports third death from Wuhan virus; WHO indicates human transmission likely | South China Morning Post

Authorities find 136 new infections in Wuhan, confirm first cases in other cities – one in Shenzhen and two in Beijing
World Health Organisation says there could be some limited human-to-human infection

Chinese authorities on Monday said another person died over the weekend from coronavirus infection, bringing the death count to three in the city of Wuhan, and for the first time officially announced the recently identified virus had spread to other areas in China.

It came as the World Health Organisation (WHO) said there was an indication that the pneumonia-like virus – thought to have originated in a seafood and animal meat market in Wuhan – could spread through human-to-human transmission.

So beware of flights to Asia - they recirculate the cabin air, giving you exposure to anyone on board who has this virus. And even in big cities, the guy coughing behind you in the elevator could be your grim reaper.

Far too little information to panic at this time.

Don’t need another Ebola panic and Asia is better suited to deal with this than Africa was, ill wait for further updates but one thing is for sure, the Chinese lunar new year is going to complicate things if it is a bad virus, it’s gonna spread like wild fire as people travel in this period.

The Ebola “panic” was the product of electoral opportunism from the nihilists in the GOP.

I understand ~23 are dead now. Hundreds are infected.

A woman infected with coronavirus arrived in Belarus today and was quarantined.

It's not looking so good. Videos are coming out showing people entering pulmonary distress on the streets.

A new Chinese hospital with 1,000 beds (one THOUSAND) in Wuhan province. Built in 5 days (!!!) Specifically for people infected with coronavirus. According to the builders they will need 2 more days to complete it with equipment!!! This damn inefficient socialist economy!

I don't know about the 5 days and I haven't been to China in over a decade, yet a friend of mine there often told of having left his apartment in Shanghai on a a Monday and having found a frickin' brand new sky scraper across the road, when he returned from his trip Friday same week.

Maybe a bit of a flourish added to that anecdote but it seems pretty indisputable that they build fast when they want to build fast.

Having lived in China as an expat for many years, I can tell you that their economy is neither communist/socialist anymore. They are communist in name only.

If he is saying the hospital in the photo is the one week wonder he is probably lying.

There is a building going up but that ain't it. I watched a video of them clearing land and pouring cement.

The grounds looked nothing like to upper photo.

I understand your doubt, but remember once upon a time, capitalism could also work wonders... For example, the Liberty ship SS Robert E. Peary, which was built during the war from laying to launching, in 4 days and 15.5 hours... Of course, this was under central planning guidance, but still...

China is known to construct large buildings within one week. That seems amazing until you find out that all they’re doing is slamming together a bunch of smaller prefabricated structures. Still, it’s smart for situations like this.

5 days? Doubtful. But the Empire State Building went up in under 18 months.

You're right, I saw coverage of that very recent ground clearing as well.

Posted image shows a new Russian pre-trial detention centre at St. Petersburg.

Miserable fail, so try again.

Yes, the building pictured is not the new hospital under construction in Wuhan. But China did construct Xiaotangshan Hospital in Beijing in 7 days in response to a SARS outbreak. They’ll likely be employing the same method - prefabricated structures - here too. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s better than a FEMA tent city.

Oh, I don't doubt their capacity for fast building.

Apart from the prefabrication that you rightly mention, they have an abundance of cheap labor to boot. Not to mention the power to stipulate working hours all the way to 24/7.

Which hospital is in the picture?
