China furious, Hong Kong celebrates after US move on bills

BEIJING (AP) — China reacted furiously Thursday to President Donald Trump’s signing two bills aimed at supporting human rights in Hong Kong, summoning the U.S. ambassador to protest and warning the move would undermine cooperation with Washington.

Hong Kong, a former British colony that was granted semi-autonomy when China took control in 1997, has been rocked by six months of sometimes violent pro-democracy demonstrations.
===================================================
Knowing what we know of China's absolute totalitarian ruling system, Trump's encouragement is only going to lead to misery, bloodshed & death. In the end China will win, just as it did in Tiananmen Square. Trump is not a statesman. He can't have it both ways.

China is, was, totalitarian with, or without Trump's encouragement. What the heck is wrong with encouraging democracy again? It is about time someone speaks the truth.
Where is the U.N.? When will those cowards speak up again real human rights violations?
I won't hold my breath.

This is an amazing case of TDS. This bill passed the House overwhelmingly and passed the Senate with unanimous consent. And who do you blame? Trump. Truly amazing.

Human lives mean nothing to the UN, all they care about is making sure the weather stays the same for all eternity.

Not to mention the compassion and solidarity here in this country. Heck, who cares about real problems if we can get all upset out imaginary ones?

Silly thing to attack Trump on, he's bad enough without making things that aren't things into thinbgs.

Oh and hey, we can also have total dumbassery science denialism AS WELL, all in one thread.

I rate this thread 10/10.

I am not so sure, PoS. If the United States passed a resolution renaming the citizens of Hong Kong "Palestinians" the United Nations would rear up on its hind legs and pass resolution after resolution condemning China, and encourage Boycotting, Divesting From and Sanctioning China.

Yeah. No matter what Trump does it will always be perceived ass totally wrong and likely criminal by half the country.

Seriously, what else was he supposed to do? Hong Kong just voted overwhelmingly for Democracy. Was Trump supposed to tell them that the US doesn't give a damn about their wishes and that they need to just STFU and go away? Since when did we become a nation that opposes Democracy or disparages those that seek to achieve or maintain it?

Well, I guess elections do have consequences and since the American commies got a little whiff of power in 2018 we can kiss Democracy goodbye worldwide.

What a morally bankrupt and pusillanimous statement, JacksinPA. The PRC's government forces were already busily oppressing and murdering the political opposition in Hong Kong. Donald Trump and Congress are finally acting in a moral fashion as to the Hong Kong question (too late in my opinion). What would you do differently right this second if the decision rested in your lap? Make peace with Fascist China and allow them to keep oppressing people, going back on deals that they made with foreign entities, and running roughshod over rule of law with nary a peep in exchange for cheap trade goods? Because that was Donald Trump's strategy and EVERY Democratic and Republican administration's strategy for the past four decades. I think as major course correction is necessary.

Denialism for pseudo-science that claims the world is gonna end if the temp goes up by another half a degree? Sure. Guilty as charged- because only idiots would believe such a silly notion.

Trump inclination is to step into controversy in the worst way. He's all about escalation.

I can’t wait for all the “glad tidings and well wishes” for next month’s holiday!

The UN is doing about as much as the US at this point: condemning the crackdown and asking for probes into the violence. It's really all either of them can do from the sidelines.

The Trump admin is right to pass these bills, for whatever little good it will do. It is what any of his predecessors would have done and follows post cold war US policy of [at least ostensibly] promoting democracy. The UN seems to be on board.

Maybe you should look at the bigger picture. Trump would love to see XI deposed. And it may happen. As you know, Trump is working to squeeze the life out of China’s economy. People in China are not happy. XI is under increased pressure for not bringing Trump under control like our least three presidents. Now Trump has called China’s bluff. In public. Previous presidents would have kow towed to China and not sanctioned such a public display of solidarity with Hong Kong.

The Chinese Communist Party is getting nervous. A failure of guns and clubs in Hong Kong is a message to the other provinces who aren’t all that thrilled with the communists control and their tightening grip of autonomy.

I'm not so sure Felis. If the United States passed a resolution renaming the citizens of Hong Kong "Palestinians" the United States would blame them for causing all the trouble, demand complete subjection, and block any resolution put forth by the rest of the world... :peace

He signed it, didn't he? The buck stops at Trump. Besides, it's wearisome when people keep tossing the term TDS everywhere. It has lost all semblance of meaning.

Maybe tRump supporters should stop reading rabid right blogs...

tRump is firing up his base without trying to hurt China (odd because our economy depends on a strong import business FROM China). For all he rants in front of the MSGA crowd he soft pedals his trade 'war'. Highly selective and suspended as much as enforced. tRump bribes Farmers, but in reality gives away market share to Brazil and other emerging nations.

I realize the rabid right loves to flail against commies, but fact is tRump puffery will do little if anything to change a strong nation's leadership. The Don loves strong man leaders, he envies them. I believe XI knows far better the measure of tRump than the other way round. There is a lot of fuss and feathers but like North Korea, so very little gets done for all the tRump tuff talk... :peace

And to condemn Israel every time it retaliates against terrorist or other aggressive acts.

I don't get the comments coming from the lefties over Trump signing of bills that were unanimously passed in the Senate meant to protect human rights in Hong Kong. Because it may upset President Xi? Seriously? If we as a country don't support human rights for those who yearn for them around the world, then we as a country have lost our soul.

I am beginning to think that there isnt a point that doesnt sail over your head.

The OP thinks Trump shouldn't have signed the bills and you had a explosive diarrhea and felt the need to scream TDS. Why is that? Is that some sort of playground childish tactic?

Who cares if China is "furious"? Tough buns!

We should not be afraid of China.

China should be afraid -- and respectful -- of the United States of America!

Lol this why you lack credibility with your criticisms of Trump. On one hand you complain that Trump sides with world dictators and on the other hand you complain he lacks diplomacy skills when he opposes them. Might i suggest you make up your mind about what you dont like about Trump and stick with it. This I hate everything about him approach is your own worst enemy.

Good point about the UN, allthough even when they do make an apperance, its toothless. In concept the UN is a great idea but in practice they are next to useless.

Get real.

Chinese are philistine barbarians in their unchanging and decrepit ancient society, culture and civilization, yet Xi Jinpingpong knows a Tiananmen use of force in HKG is the end of his one country two systems mantra which he uses weekly about Taiwan the Republic of China. It's snake eyes for him.
