    Hong Kong

How does this mess play out? Any members in the area?

At least 72 injured in violent Hong Kong protests over extradition bill

Just passed the 30 year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests.

Most of those who could get out with their money have already done so. Few did not see this coming. If not one excuse, another. This was the fear when the British lease expired, and now it is playing out. Sad, but inevitable.

Within the last two decades more than a half million ethnic Chinese have immigrated to the US from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland. The wealthiest from Hong Kong having migrated to Los Angelos, NYC, and London. Many of those from Hong Kong still have family, property and other wealth still in Hong Kong. The resurrection of Sunset Park in Brooklyn (now the largest "Chinatown" in NYC) and Flushing in Queens is astounding, with new construction everywhere. No signs in English, and no place to park. The amount of money flowing through both communities is phenomenal. Both are also home to other ethnic Asians, including Koreans, Thais, Vietnamese, and others including subsets from India. The migration is not limited to these communities. My wife and I often take public transportation to Flushing for the dim sum. Exploring the streets I remember as a teenager, and seeing none of the stores I frequented at that time is an adventure. Buying pizza at Mario's after a movie at the 3k seat RKO Keith's, a long lost pleasure. Replaced by a land marked derelict with a future in doubt as a glass enclosed condo tower.

Have you heard why they protested. I saw morning news and they weren't very clear on the cause.

A new extradition treaty with mainland China

The treaty would make it easier for Hong Kong to extradite people charged with crimes in mainland China to China. It is supposed to be only usable when the crimes are crimes both in Hong Kong and in Mainland China

    Re: Hong Kong

The opposition by Hong Kong protesters is about more than technicalities. It's about the mainland police being the goons of the CCP Dictator-Tyrants in Beijing, to include the police in Hong Kong who are equally loyal and obedient in their own sty.

Concerns were highlighted on Saturday with news that a local high court judge had been reprimanded by the chief justice after his signature appeared on a public petition against the bill.

Reuters reported earlier that several senior Hong Kong judges were worried about the changes, noting a lack of trust in mainland courts as well as the limited nature of extradition hearings.

Human rights groups have repeatedly cited the alleged use of torture, arbitrary detentions, forced confessions and problems accessing lawyers in China. Opponents of the bill question the fairness and transparency of the Chinese court system and worry about Chinese security forces contriving charges.

Foreign governments have also expressed concern, warning of the impact on Hong Kong's reputation as an international financial hub, and noting that foreigners wanted in China risk getting ensnared in Hong Kong.

Schoolteacher Garry Chiu joined the protest with his wife and 1-year-old daughter, saying, "It is no longer about me." "I need to save my daughter. If the law is implemented anyone can disappear from Hong Kong. No one will get justice in China. We know there are no human rights," Chiu added.
