Otto Warmbier: Was Kim Jong-un really clueless about US student? - BBC News

US President Donald Trump has defended North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over the case of an American student who died after being jailed by North Korea.

Otto Warmbier was returned to the US in a coma in June 2017, but died days later.

Speaking in Vietnam on Thursday, Mr Trump said: "He tells me he didn't know about it, and I will take him at his word."

Trump loves backing autocrats, probably because he feels a close kinship with them. Putin, MBS, Kim - they are all blameless saints to The Donald, who would love to be just like them.

Another thread on this.

I get it, we dislike Trump and his attitude about other world leaders we do not trust.

However, what did everyone think would happen? And I'll ask the same question I've asked everyone else, what do you want to do about North Korea because of Warmbier or anything else?

You are never going to find out what Kim Jong-un did and did not know.

These arrests are very rare, always calculated. NK knows exactly what it is doing when it arrests an American citizen.

We have every reason to believe Kim knew and no reason to believe he didn't. Well, other than that a vain liar who wants to defend the warm relations with Kim that ended up with him getting owned wants us to believe Kim didn't know.

It is notable that you completely sidestepped answering what you claim should be done about the death of Warmbier.

Again... what do you want to do about North Korea about this?

It is a very simple question. I get it, no one likes Trump and even less trust Kim Jong-un. So now what?

Do something other than jump on the bandwagon with everyone else that spews the rhetoric but has absolutely nothing to offer on what to do with North Korea about this.

And not a one of you has anything to say about the absolute idiocy of traveling to North Korea in the first place. It does not make Warmbier's death any less tragic, but there is no reason to travel there expecting good things. You even point out why yet have zero to say about what to do about it.

I did speak to [Kim about Warmbier]. He felt very badly. He knew the case very well, but he knew it later. And, you know, you got a lot of people — big country, lot of people. And in those prisons and those camps, you have a lot of people. And some really bad things happened to Otto. Some really, really bad things. But he tells me that he didn’t know about it and I will take him at his word.

Trump said Kim knew the case very well, but he knew it later. Probably it was too late to save Otto Warmbier and Kim decided to send him back home on humanitarian grounds. There is no first-class medical facility in North Korea to treat a patient like him. There was an outbreak of type C botulism in South Korea occurred in October 2007 and Korean foods may be really dangerous to Westerners travelling to Korea.

Those sort of incidents simply do not occur without the dictator’s knowledge in any country, much less North Korea.

By endorsing Kim’s lie, Trump has exposed himself.... again.

Yeah, it was the food that resulted in the coma. Where does the fat glutton keep his diabetes under control? Humanitarian grounds?
You post as though you have been in a coma until recently?
