President Xi warned Taiwan yesterday that he wants to bring it under Beijing’s control by 2050, if necessary by force.

In an unyielding speech, Mr Xi abandoned decades of policy in which China asserted its right to the breakaway island while being content for the thorny relationship to be solved by future generations. He said unification was “inevitable” and told Taiwan not to try China’s patience.
=========================================
More tension between China & the West, which has stood by Taiwan in the past (except when it came tme to figure out which China would join the U.N.).

Taiwan should’ve declared full independence a decade ago when the had military superiority. Now they have no chance in a war

not far fetched

i recall a time - not so long ago - when it would have been anathema to believe that hong kong would one day be under chinese control

Not surprising, China is looking to control as much as they can as quickly as they can.

Taiwan is a lost cause, we all need to understand at least this much. As the West collapses the NEW CHINESE EMPIRE is on the romp, it will likely romp far.

I don’t believe the financial markets will accept that at all. At the very least the SEC will put a block on all Chinese ( red ) corporations being traded from the US.

I believe the key here is 2050. By 2050, OAC could be in her second term, Donald Trump Jr could be out of jail and Kim K. will still look exactly the same, however she can't move or speak.

She'll be our dear leader indefinitely, as president of Chinese puppet government.

Puppet of the Chinese is entirely possible, even today, maybe unwittingly, maybe not. But I see no brilliant strategy at play, only childish tit for tat. And meanwhile it is costing our farmers and ranchers their livings. He say's we're winning, I got the dairy farmers 3% more dairy market in Canada. But by pulling out of PTA, the beef ranchers face a 36% tariff on American beef in Asia. Woo Hoo.
Somebody needs new calculator.

There was this matter of the U.K. leasing HK for 99 years or some such. The Chinese were just enforcing the lease terms.
