TOKYO (AP) — Nagasaki marked the anniversary of the world’s second atomic bombing Thursday with the United Nations chief and the city’s mayor urging global leaders to take concrete steps toward nuclear disarmament.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the first United Nations chief to visit Nagasaki, said fears of nuclear war are still present 73 years after the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings and that the attacks should never be repeated. He raised concerns about slowing efforts to denuclearize, saying existing nuclear states are modernizing their arsenals.

The Hiroshima A-bombing came as a surprise; the Nagasaki A-bombing a few days later ended WWII in the Pacific. Now, as both sides modernize their vast nuclear weapons stockpiles, there is even more reason to fear it happening again & destroying life on Earth.

Are we doing this again?

Fat Man and Litte Boy get separate billing?

They were 2 different bombs dropped on different days on different cities. The Nagasaki bomb is perhaps more significant because it got the Japanese to surrender.

I understand my history; I think I posted in the earlier thread, but had an idea how the thread would play out......This one probably devolves as well.

and THAT is what should be found significant

experiencing the effects of one atomic explosion was not sufficient to bring the japanese government to the point to declare a surrender. that required a second atomic blast

and yet there are still those who insist japan was ready to surrender prior to the first nuclear explosion; that dropping the nuclear bombs was unnecessary to bring japan to its knees. such a position is without any logic

Ground hog day...... Seems like this happened before?

Japan is interesting it just recently overtook China as the second largest stock market after a significant slump in Chinese stocks. Some pro-Chinese publishers are saying it's only temporary but I think Japan is ready for a second coming, after two decades of zombie economy. I think eventually it will pull ahead of China, nothing meteoric like you would see with a developing economy but the Japanese economy have been growing steadily of late. Japan and South korea would also win in the Trade war if China agrees to stop their large subsidies for export industry, Japanese quality goods will be more competitive once more. Japan also has much higher average income compared to China with it's vastly unequal society created by communist principals of land expropriation and enriching a small elite, therefore wealthier consumer base. Both China and Japan have ageing societies but Japan has invested heavily in AI and robotics to help workers remain in the workplace for longer. China is highly indebted and I believe may well enter a zombie gowth phase, the length of time depends on what they do now to fix the mess.

North Korea's denuclearization should be the top priority. Except for the unstable rogue states, it's unlikely for the nuclear-armed states to resort to the use of nuclear weapons again, fearing mutually assured destruction (MAD). America was the only nuclear power in 1945 and it only needed to demonstrate the destructive power of the new weapon.

if israel dropped a nuclear weapon in the middle east - say iran - which nation(s) would assure israel's mutual destruction
