Thai Cave rescue - boys could be stranded for months

The Thai Navy seals have confirmed the four “frogs” remain in the cave. These are a doctor and three navy seals who have been supporting the boys. (The Guardian.)

They are currently navigating their way out.

This one has really touched my heart. Almost there. So much respect for the divers. So brave and so selfless.

The (remaining) three divers and the doctor are reported on their way and expected to emerge soon.

Since the boys won't be able to make it to the WC final at FIFA's invitation (understandably, since they are quarantined in hospital), maybe visiting ManU will serve as compensation.

I hear the club has extended invitations.

Re: Four boys resued

US military to military relations with Thailand are stellar and they have been for a very long time. The US disapproves of the military coup government since 2014 as Washington sided with the elected government that got deposed. Still it was the 20th coup or coup attempt in Thailand since before the Vietnam War in which Thailand was an active ally to include driving out Marxist rebels in the Thai northeast. (Chiang Rai is in the northwest.) The Thai military was ruthless about it to include wiping out Marxist influence in Bangkok, the universities in particular. (Google Thammasat U in 1976.) Five will get you ten the US is working with the Thai military government and the government in Kiev in the Thai purchase of Ukraine military equipment.

Thailand's aircraft carrier is equipped with Hughes AN/SPS-52C 3-D medium range air search radar, a Kelvin Hughes navigation and helicopter control radar and a Kelvin Hughes I-band navigation radar; a MX 1105 Transit/GPS Omega satellite navigation system, as well as a Tacan system. The command and control system is made up of a combat information center with seven Inisel consoles. The center is based on the Tritan combat data system using Unisys UYK-3 and UYK-20 computers. The Thai carrier has Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk helicopters. It has Raytheon/General Dynamics Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems and two 30mm naval guns. The ship is fitted with one eight-cell Mk 41 vertical launch system (VLS) for the Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missile.

The carrier which was purchased from Spain in 1997 in the swindle of the century was used in flood rescue operations connected to the Tsunami of 2004 which I had the dubious distinction of experiencing firsthand, and in flood control from off the coasts during monsoons in the South of Thailand in 2010 and in 2011. The carrier uses Harrier vertical takeoff jets due to its relatively short flight deck. Thailand btw has a 350,000 military force equipped largely by US contractors with 375,000 in reserves. Thailand's history is to balance foreign powers against each other, hence Putin visiting Thailand to solicit it while the Thais purchase military equipment from Ukraine and maintain the Thai-US mutual defense treaty alliance. I've already noted in numerous posts the Russian Mafia controls the coastal sleaze tourist sextrap of Pattaya City and beach on the Gulf of Thailand. My Thailand playground during my time there was in Phuket which is where the tsunami roared ashore from very high above our heads. My hotel was in a horseshoe area open to the sea but nestled in hills which enabled my scurrying escape thx.

I don't care about all that claptrap. Just stop intimating the US did the cave rescue all by herself. That's just wrong on many levels.

Everyone is now out and safe. The hospital reports that so far, 3 of the boys have fungal lung infections. But this can be remedied with anti-fungal drugs and antibiotics.

Welcome back to the team and their coach! Congrats and a hearty thank you to all nations and specialists involved! A fantastic job in an extremely difficult situation.

Superb and selfless work on the part of all the rescuers....well done, ladies and gentlemen.

Re: Four boys resued

Thai press conference has chief rescue co-ordinator stating that remaining 4 rescuers in cave (3 divers and the Australian medic) are about 15 minutes away from the cave entrance.

Update: just been announced that they're all out.

Fantastic.

Re: Four boys resued

It's just been reported here that all of the rescue team are now out. Mission accomplished. Incredible.

Thoughts are with the family and friends of Saman Gunan who died attempting to save others and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Thai Navy Seals said it best...

Hooyah!!!

Re: Four boys resued

The medic and 3 divers who stayed with the team in the cave are now reported out of the cave.

It is truly a bittersweet relief.

One brave diver did die after his oxygen ran out while deliving oxygen canisters inside the cave for the rescue operation.

All thirteen rescued from Thai cave

CHIANG RAI, Thailand (Reuters) - All 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped for more than two weeks deep inside a flooded Thai cave have been rescued, a Thai navy SEAL unit said on Tuesday, a successful end to a perilous mission that has gripped the world.

"The 12 Wild Boars and coach have emerged from the cave and they are safe," the SEAL unit said on its official Facebook page.

And on the third day the sun shone bright.

Two more young footballers of Mu Pa Academy football club on Tuesday separately emerged from Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province on the day 3 of operation to remove the remaining four football players and their assistant coach.

Boy #9 left the cave at 4:06 PM.

Boy # 10 at 4:33 PM.

The 11th boy reached the cave entrance at 5:15 PM. Thai TV is stating that the eleventh to be rescued is the smallest, assumed to be 11-year-old Chanin Wiboonrungrueng. He’s the smallest and is in good health.

12th boy and the Coach are reported to have reached Chamber 3. Coach is under medical evaluation. All divers are also out of the waters -- all of the rescue effort team is home safety. The twelveth boy and the coach are going together to the hospital to be reunited with all the boys. 17 Days 3 hours 37 minutes.

BBC reports that as the boys apparently support Man Utd, the club have officially invited them all to a game next season. Inviting the divers would make the idea a complete thought.

First in, Last out.

A big cheer as rescue leader Narongsak Osottanakorn arrived for a press conference. Cheers and applause when he concluded it.

TBS (Thai TV) reporting pumping at #ThamLuang has stopped. Sgt. Major Saman Gunan RIP brave and decent Thai Navy Seal in retirement, volunteered, sacrificed his life. All thoughts are with his family and colleagues.

Wonderful news. What an amazing accomplishment - Those rescuers are heroes.

Lovely to read that all the boys and their coach are out. R.I.P the Thai seal who lost his life in the rescue.

Well done to all involved - this was a brilliant example of the human spirit and endurance.

Re: Four boys resued

One of the most inspiring rescue stories ever, I would love to know more about the details. The whole thing was meticulously planned, contingencies for contingencies, I hope they share more information

Yeah, imagine sitting in pitch black for 10 solid days with murky water all around you then suddenly one day out of that water a foreign but very British voice says to you from the middle of the pool - "Hello! How many of you are here?"

Re: Four boys resued

The first group of four boys to be rescued have been cleared by doctors to eat normally as of today. Rumor has it the chicken population has been reduced by a half already. Confirmed as fact is that parents visiting the boys beginning today must wear hazmat outfits and talk to their kids from two meters away. Neither the parents nor the boys are pleased by the hazmat requirement but imagine the boys sitting there looking at their parents as something out of ET.

CHIANG RAI — Twelve boys and their football coach had no serious health concerns Wednesday morning after the last group of five was successfully rescued from a flooded northern cave and transferred to hospital last night.

The parents of the first four boys to be rescued were allowed to pay bedside visits to their quarantined children on the condition they wear hazmat suits and keep a distance of two meters.

th

Something like this perhaps?

Parents of the second group of boys, those rescued Monday, will be allowed to make similar visits later today, according to the Health Department’s deputy chief.

“The 13 must have taken cared of each other very well [inside the cave],” Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong said. “None of them show a level of stress that we should be concerned about.”

The first four boys are healthy and can eat regular food, Thongchai said at Monday’s press briefing, adding that those in the second group suffering from lung inflammation were getting better. He said they must be treated at the hospital for at least seven days. While the second four are also healthy, some have high blood cell counts, which must be closely monitored. They will be able to eat normally this evening.

None in the third group – four boys and their 25-year-old coach – suffered hypothermia, according to Thongchai. Their blood pressure and heart rates are normal. Following protocol, the five received eye examinations, mental health checkups and were vaccinated for rabies and tetanus.

Lab results showed the first two groups were free of disease. However, there is no set date for their discharge from hospital as they continue to undergo treatment.

Asked by a reporter, Thongchai denied knowledge of reports the 13 were sedated with anti-anxiety medication during their evacuation. “They were conscious when they arrived at the hospital … I don’t have any details about when they were being transferred from the cave,” he said.

It's Amazing Thailand as the slogan has it from many years ago and as developed by the Thailand Tourism Authority.

Applause and cheers greet international and Navy SEAL divers

The dozens of international divers and Thai Navy SEAL frogmen who were involved in the high-risk operation to bring all the 13 survivors out of Tham Luang cave were given a resounding applause and cheers by hundreds of officials and volunteers after they emerged from the cave at about 7.10 pm.

The last five survivors, including the football coach, were safely brought out of the cave and sent to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital earlier.

“We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science or what. All the thirteen Wild Boars are now out of the cave,” was a message posted on the Thai Navy SEAL’s Facebook page.

Chief of the rescue operation Narongsak Osotthanakaorn told a news conference later that the four SEAL members who had been keeping the 13 suvivors company since they were discovered by a team of British divers a week ago were the last to emerge from the cave. They include Dr Park Loharnchun, a medical doctor who has trained as a SEAL member and who has become a celebrity for his role. The news was also greeted with a loud applause from journalists and volunteers.

Narongsak expressed his gratitude for all the divers and volunteers who joined in the rescue mission which he described as a historical event unprecedented in the world.

Re: Four boys resued

Richard Harris (Harry) was the last person to exit the cave. Sadly, his Dad passed away shortly after he left the cave.

For those who aren't familiar with Harry, he is an Australian Doctor (anaesthetist), and one of Australia's leading technical cave divers. He entered the cave before each rescue operation and assessed the boys' fitness to make the journey. He was the man tasked with giving the medical all-clear for each evacuation, and decided what order the boys would leave the cave in. He doesn't wear the hero tag well and believes that term should be reserved for the 12 boys and the 4 SEALS who stayed with the boys the entire time.

He has previously been involved in other humanitarian assignments throughout the years and is well respected. Just a beautiful and selfless man. Such a sad way to end what should now be a time of celebration for him.

The highs and the lows of Real Life. Can be so brutal.

Re: Four boys resued

It all ended well, the rescuers deserve a medal at the very least.
