(CNN)In a move surely intended to put Washington on notice China's military has put on a show of force in the South China Sea, new satellite images show, with drills at sea and in the air to reinforce its claims in the contested region.

Analysts said the images, provided by Planet Labs Inc and date-stamped March 26, showed China's only operational aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, accompanied by dozens of other vessels in the South China Sea, just south of the Chinese island province of Hainan.

You can bet your yuan that if trouble starts it will be in the South China Sea.

How is holding a naval exercise just off your territory a challenge to another country?

I could see holding one far from your land but right next to another country being a challenge.

China considers all South China Sea waters within its "9 dash line" to be Chinese territorial waters.

Not so. The International Maritime Court ruled last year that China's artificial claims in the SCS are not supported by Maritime Law.

China is doing everything possible (artificial islands, ramming, naval drills, etc.) to intimidate its neighbors into accepting the Chinese 9 dash line claims.

China should just start naval exercises off the US somewhere.. and lets see how the US would feel about that.

My comment was specific to the naval exercises which according to the article
just south of the Chinese island province of Hainan.
were just south of Chinese territory. Not in any disputed territory. It would be like saying the US is challenging China by holding a naval exercise of the coast of San Fran

I remember a quote from Will Rogers:

"How would we feel if the Chinese Navy sent gun boats up the Mississippi to look after Chinese laundries in Memphis"

Why should anyone take China’s claim to the entire South China Sea seriously? You do realize there are about a half dozen other countries with claims.....right?

Not talking about the claim... talking about the US holding war games near China.

Meanwhile the 4-5 USN sub commanders keeping an eye on them are laughing to themselves as they snuggle up to their sub-hunters. Seriously, we could take out that entire task force without so much as breaking a sweat and never have to even think about nukes.

Imagine if they came and did that to us in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico? How would USA feel about it?

This stuff leads to nowhere.

Yes, we have many allies which are geographically close to China. Like South Korea. And semi allies, like Taiwan. Should we not exercise with our allies just because they happen to be geographically close to an aggressive, communist power with a history of making land grabs?

Do you think we're stupid PeteEU? Your article above is from July 2017, not now as you stated.

You cant be that naive. The US does not hold regular military exercises with allies or alone in none strategic places. You cant just come and complain about China defending its borders and sphere of influence and not have to accept that if China or whoever started to do war games in your backyard...

Actually patently false; the US routinely holds regular military exercises both with NATO and non NATO allies.

For example....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Spirit

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Talisman_Saber

China is not "defending its borders"; China is saber rattling in an attempt to bully it's neighbors into accepting Chinese land grabs. And no, countries like Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, and Malaysia are not "part of China's sphere of influence" nor should anyone pretend they are.

I get that in Denmark it's fashionable to bash the United States, but try engaging your brain for once.

That is rich! Switch out the word communist and replace it with capitalist and you've described American territorial expansion and European empires throughout the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. China's frontiers have expanded and contracted for centuries but over the long run they have been far more stable than the titanic land and sea grabs by the Western European empires, Russia and the USA. Just a century ago you were carving up China into concessions while Standard Oil was ruthlessly exploiting its resources at the tip of the barrels of Marine and Army guns. And now you complain because China is doing the same thing to its neighbours? China has been an Asian superpower since the Shang Dynasty four thousand years ago. Your ancestors were likely living in wattle and daub huts with their livestock beside them, trying to figure out how to make and work copper and bronze tools while China was making incredible bronze art that we cannot even reproduce today.

How is this different from what the Teddy Roosevelt administration did to Columbia in order to build the Panama Canal? He at least had the honesty to declare that the US had "stolen the land fair and square".

Pot calling kettle black (or green-brown if made of bronze), much?

Cheers.

Oh really? Please call me when any capitalist nation kills even remotely as many people as Chairman Mao did, or who continues to
ensure the existence of North Korea, one of, if not the most, evil nation state on the face of the earth.

It's not the seventeenth century anymore, nor is it the eighteenth or even nineteenth century anymore. The same things you claim to deplore when the West did them should not magically become okay when the Chinese communists indulge in them.

Yes, you can ask the Tibetans how much fun it is being next door, and eventually part, of such a "stable" power:roll:

You seem to be forgetting that the Chinese were equally fond of territorial expansion and land grabs for centuries. They turned inwards and neglected to modernize, which was the only reason they didn't make "titanic land grabs"---and in actuality they did make huge land grabs well before Mao came to power.

Yes, just a century ago there were dozens of warlords competing for power in China. So what? How does that justify aggression against your neighbors.....at all?

The Shang dynasty is completely and utterly irrelevant. Unless you are suggesting recreating, say, Poland-Lithuania and the Teutonic Order, that is not an excuse for aggression against your neighbors.

And yet, my ancestors didn't murder tens of millions of people. The Chinese Communists did. So, frankly, I think I come out ahead on that bargain.

I guess if we are going to use 1900s logic, you won't mind the US starts annexing chunks of land around the world....right?
