Duterte says 'goodbye' to US ties in Beijing | News | GMA News Online

BEIJING, China - President Rodrigo Duterte said it was "time to say goodbye" to the US during a visit to China on Wednesday, as the combative leader reconfigures his country's diplomatic alliances.

Duterte is in China for a four-day trip that is expected to confirm his tilt away from Washington and towards Beijing's sphere of influence.

During a speech addressing the Filipino community in Beijing, the firebrand president said the Philippines had gained little from its long alliance with the US, its former colonial ruler.

"Your stay in my country was for your own benefit. So time to say goodbye, my friend," he said, as if addressing the US.

"I will not go to America anymore. I will just be insulted there," he added, before once again referring to US President Barack Obama as a "son of a whore".

Duterte, who took office in late June, said he was fed up with the Philippines' foreign policy being dictated by a Western agenda.

"What kept us from China was not our own making. I will charter a new course," he said.

This is a major geopolitical shift.

It is certainly a discomfort. A major shift it is not. The major shift is under way, but unfolding slowly and continuously. We shall see many shifts of alliance back and forth around the world in the next two decades. At one point, there will be major war. Till then there will be small and medium combat here and there. That is the nature of multipolarization.

Duterte seems to have the primary interests of the Philipine people as his credo. Philipine leaders have historically been bought and paid for by the USA. It looks like a man of the people is going to lead them with a real moral compass. The USA used up any good will it could have generated by political gamesmanship detrimental to the Philipines. Will he live long enough to accomplish anything? He's made himself a target.

You have got to be kidding me.

What is it with conspiracy theorists that they love strongman types so much? They are all about "moral responsibility" and "the government is corrupt and evil" and "our democracy is flawed" but give them a man whose willing to order large numbers of his own people killed or thrown in jail and all of sudden they go gaga. Seems tome they just don't like democracy very much.

I was unaware extrajudicial killings of drug addicts made up a large portion of your moral compass Dave. No wonder you can't seem to figure out what's so bad about the Assad regime.

China is going to walk all over the Phillippines, and Duterte is too stupid to see that. Either that, or he just doesn't care. Though I guess with China he won't have to deal with that pesky "human rights" issue.

In Fagan's world, this is a man of moral compass...

When is the last time China walked all over some Nation. Take your time. "Human Rights" must be a vague definition since the USA'a illegal war in Iraq. Coup d'etat in Ukraine. Failed coup d'etat in Syria. Destruction of Libya. Millions dead, millions of refiugees and you want the pot to call the kettle black.
