Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte appeared to liken himself to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler on Friday and said he would "be happy" to exterminate three million drug users and peddlers in the country.

His comments triggered shock and anger among Jewish groups in the United States, which will add to pressure on the U.S. government to take a tougher line with the Philippines leader. Duterte recently insulted President Barack Obama and in a series of remarks he has undermined the previously close relationship between Manila and Washington.

Noting that Hitler had murdered millions of Jews, Duterte said: "There are three million drug addicts (in the Philippines). I'd be happy to slaughter them."

Talk about being a buzz kill, Duterte wants to kill all buzzes, no drugs for you!

What about weed smokers? Some Asian countries still subscribe to the 'Reefer Madness' paranoia that the US experienced several decades ago. I've heard of people serving 1 year in prison for being arrested with small amounts of weed in Japan.

When you allow capital punishment, it becomes an open case of where to beginn and how to apply it. And when you allow killing humans possessing some attribute or another, it is only a matter of opinion, which other attributes you want to include.

Or maybe the Philippines is a 3rd world country, and Duterte is a crackpot.

Absolutely. But it is a very large country and it was on a good development path within reason.

Uh oh, looks like the phillipinnes are doing the war on drugs. Prepare yourselves for the Philippines having the highest execution rates in the world.

I don't think the Philippines is third-world. Aren't they aligned with the US?

He is a moron. And the PR is a nasty place, one the worst I ever visited. We should shut down all of our military bases there, let this tough guy fend for himself.

Ever been there? I've been to 4 islands, Dumaguete, Porta Princesa, Cebu and Manilla. Its a craphole with few redeeming virtues. I'd call it 3.33 world. There are lots of true third world places I'd return to, but not the PR, its a terrible place on all accounts.

... For dealing, particularly those that ran large organizations. In Japan, if you are caught with an amount that constitutes personal use, you will be imprisoned and deported for life.

Do some research GM. It's probably the poorest country in Asia. The people are great, I worked with a guy from the Philippines. He was the nicest guy you'd ever meet, and worked everyone else under the table. But the country is desperately poor.

 The guy's a menace. Worse than Assad or Putin.

The last thing we need is another interventionist debacle. Afganistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Vietnam....all blunders. This is part of the reason why the world hates us, this incessant meddling coupled with the disastrous results we've achieved in these affairs.

Plus, we know that our politicians serve their business puppeteers, who are likely chomping at the bit to go start another war in some 3rd world country.

F that noise.

The term is a cold-war leftover. The first world isthe US and countries aligned with it, the second is the USSR and it's allies, the third world is unaligned countries.
Unless that's another term that's been 'redefined'.

Third world means countries that aren't aligned with NATO (the first world) or the Soviet Union (the second world).
It's terminology that's left over from the cold war.

Its on par with Thailand and Vietnam for me, while those two other countries Ive mentioned have better food, people in the Philippines speak better English and love foreigners, so it kind of evens it out. Some good beaches if you know where to look too.

How about the bar girls? They love you long time?

Thailand and Vietnam have some culture and places of historic interest (and great food), PR...not so much.

Bar girls are pretty much the same in every country. Its the price that varies.

I agree, the PI seems to be a mishmash of American culture dragged through a tropical dump, but the people there have their charms. Cheap diving though.

It is all tough talk. He would probably have to kill members of his own family and party. Not gonna happen.

I only had one dive...grrr, and it wasn't that good, I was in the wrong places, took advice from the wrong people. Oh well, one less country I ever have to visit.

Since it's the U.S. exporting "REEFER MADNESS PARANOIA" I'm finding it wonderfully ironic that Dutarte severed relations with the U.S. because of our criticism of his drug enforcement policies. You can't make up this stuff. Our foreign policy leaders are a bunch of basketcases.
