Kim Jung Un just set off yet another nuclear device, this one bigger than the last. He's also working on a missile and wants to make his nuke small enough to become a warhead.

We seem to be focused on Iran and their erstwhile nuclear ambitions for some reason, but NK actually does have a nuke, is working on making it better, and has bellicose ambitions against most of the rest of the world.

Ideas: How do we deal with the likes of North Korea?

Maybe Obama could draw a red line and hold a speech about all the options on the table?

We have to get China to do it.

And we need to apply a buttload of pressure to do it, starting with Japan, Vietnam, and south Korea. The way to do it is for these countries to begin "the whispers"... about developing tactical nuclear weapons and submarine forces. Then there is India who has been on the fence a long time, but doesn't trust the Chinese. We are their biggest export market.

China can turn North Korea into a colony in a day if they chose to do so.

NK is China's problem, not ours.

Past Admins haven't done anything about NK, and neither should this or future Admins do anything. There's nothing short of total war that can be done, and no one wants that.

So let China handle them. Even China is in a tough spot, they don't want to lean on NK too hard, or even bring down their Regime. Last thing China wants is NK and its basket case of an economy to fold which would mean China would have millions of more people to feed and take care of.

The trouble with that is, NK is not China's problem alone. It is a problem for the world, including the US. Their ambition is to have a missile with a nuclear warhead capable of reaching the US. Should they reach their goal, then the brown stuff could really strike the air moving device.

Maybe we need to put pressure on China to take care of their little barking dog before it gets out of the yard.

Do what? Break international law by making NK a colony?

Sounds like a question that South Korea should answer.

China is NK only 'friend' and only protector. And it is NOT in China's best interest for NK to be stirring up trouble in China's backyard. Again, in a way China's hands are tied a little. I am pretty sure they don't want Un to be playing with nukes and shooting off missiles. BUT I doubt they want to pressure him too much, having a Coup in NK makes all sorts of other problems for China.

This isn't directed at you. But it is easy to sit safely are our keyboards and say 'Bush should have done this and that regarding China, or Russia, or NK. And/Or Obama should do this or that. When dealing with nuclear powers like Russia, or China or NK(China's ally) . You just can't say stop firing missiles or we'll invade. The tough talk of the Obama haters and Trump asskissers are pretty much BS and empty talk and useless chest thumping.

Works for me. China is more afraid of South Korea and North Korea uniting and spreading evil democratic ideas to China.
I think China is more afraid of them uniting because it would, overtime, strengthen a country that is very close with the US. They like having NK around because it applies what little pressure it has directly on the US and SK. There definitely does need to be strong pressure on China to keep NK in check. I'm sure there already is to some extent, but China needs to stop propping up NK's 1950's communist experiment.

What should be done about NK and its nukes?

China is the regional hegemon and protects NK, so it's China's problem to solve.

We don't know who, if anyone has or can take the authority to launch and send a nuke our way.

Nothing.

If he ever does get too carried away, a few cruise missiles will shut down his sites entirely.

If he attacks the south border, he will be annihilated.

Stop. Just stop.

If NK actually "nukes" anyone it basically starts a nuclear world war with fallout effecting everybody.
Especially those countries closest to NK.

So let those countries closest to NK worry about them.

If NK sent a nuke to the US, we'd make NK a sheet of glass in minutes. Who would then be most effected by the trade winds and nuclear poisons?
All of Asia.

So all of Asia has a stake in what NK does. That means all of Asia can "control" them however they want.

We need to stay the fornication out of it.

Totally agree.

Sabre rattling and "tough talk" by the west isn't going to make Un quit playing with his dangerous toys.

True, but is Un sane enough to realize this?
And, would annihilating NK lead to a war with China?

I think China would recognize the NK error, and would act as more of a 3rd party negotiator.

But, they would enter the conflict if we did a land invasion as a initial action.

Yes, they most likely would.
Which is why China needs to take the lead in reining in North Korea.

They are not mad. The leader is cleverly looking after his own interests and protecting his power. His killings of people close to him is selective and focused on eliminating threats.

This is also his way with the rest of the world. Cautious paranoid defensiveness.

He has a nuke. He has the capacity to flatten Seoul with artillery. Thus he is relatively untouchable.

Leave him alone and NK will one day suddenly break free of it's present enslavement just like the communist block did.

You are an optimist.
And, I hope you're right.

Its the least bad option.

Even for those suffering in North Korea under the hell it is it is better not to be bombed sideways and shot and wait for the inevitable collapse of the house of cards based on a very few thinking they are better off under the present conditions.

and if crazy little Kim actually shoots a nuke at the US or Europe, then we'll have a real problem. A preemptory strike, on the other hand, could end in disaster.

China needs to take the lead in this and make its lapdog quit barking at the rest of the world, it seems to me.
