Anybody else getting into this? I’ve really been enjoying it. For the record, though, the show’s title is apt: while the Star Trek universe is very much a backdrop of the show, a backdrop it is. The show is called “Picard,” and it’s about Picard.

That’s not to say that there isn’t spacefaring adventuring, because of course there is,* but this isn’t standard Star Trek fare. This is smarter, more human and cleverer than anything you may be used to from the franchise, but it’s definitely more stoic than what you may be used to. Which is appropriate because the inherent nature of Jean Luc Picard is, if nothing else, stoic.

*If the show was Jean Luc Picard reading poetry in a retirement home, it wouldn’t have gotten past the test audience phase.

How does one watch it? I dunno what CBS All Access is.

I started watching last night, finished the first episode. Pretty good so far, it's definitely got potential! Patrick Stewart is a delight and if I saw that correctly in the trailer the ever so lovely Seven of Nine is back as well. So much nostalgia.

I’m not going to answer this for fear of giving away future events, but Seven of Nine is totally in the show.

God... She, along with Sam from Stargate SG1 is one of the reasons I have a thing for powerful blondes.

How? Computer, TV, do I gotta press a button somewhere, is it just a channel on cable?

In Germany it's on Amazon Prime.

It’s been about 25 years since she was last 7o9, but time has been good to her. At least as good as it’s been to me since she and I are probably the same age, but that’s largely because I only think happy thoughts.

I don't expect my TV is online because I almost never use it. Watching on computer is not bad. Perhaps.

Roku. It turns your stupid tv into a smart tv. And unlike a smart tv, it doesn’t send all your personal data to the mother ship.

I sometimes also watch on my computer, but I own a large professional external graphics monitor for art purposes, and that doesn’t describe most people.

I am enjoying the series.

You are correct...this is quite different than previous ST series. Heck, it's taken four episodes just to set the scene...to put all the pieces in their places. But now we can get to the real action.

btw...

For once, the Federation of Planets are not good guys.

Just finished the fourth episode myself. The exact nature of the Federation’s sin hasn’t been made explicitly clear yet, but it has to be pretty bad if it made Picard publicly renounce Starfleet.

Curious if it has anything to do with the ever infamous Section 31.

Hmmm... I absolutely loathe it.

Because it’s not what Star Trek is about and that’s fine, if you enjoy it, more power to you but ultimately for me it comes down to this fundamental thing.

Star Trek was about tackling difficult situations but showing there was another way, through different viewpoints, understanding, sacrifice, team work and a whole host of other things, we could overcome issues without resorting to our baser human instincts, it showed us what we could become.

Now that doesn’t mean to say there was never violence in Star Trek, or that everyone always acted in the “right” way but those instances were mostly a means to an end to make a larger point.

Now it could be said that what Star Trek did all those years ago just wouldn’t make good TV today and fair point, but it’s just not for me, Star Trek showed us what we could be, now it says that, that universe is as **** as ours is, now people are chopping off heads, swearing, xenophobic, being alcoholics, popping pills, meh.

I just dont want that from Star Trek so I’ll have to settle for the old stuff, I’ve got Narcos Mexico for that and if this series wanted to make the point that the Federation has devolved like that, they didn’t do a very good job of it, if they had started earlier in the time line, showed us properly what happened with the Romulan rescue fleet and the mars attack and people’s relationship with the androids and more about what happened among the star fleet high command and fleshed out why things went south so quick then all this could have been more justified, but they’ve left all that out in minor flashbacks which is just poor storytelling.

I’d love to hear a rebuttal if anyone wants to take the time, but that’s where I stand with this.

It confused me when I saw the actress that played Deanna Troy in another Star Trek series show up here in a completely different character.

I kept asking my friend. "Isn't that the physic?".

I thought so at first, but consider, TNG was 1987-1994. Marina Sirtis is now 64 years old. That character did not look anywhere near that age.

This is her now: Marina Sirtis - Wikipedia

And she actually is to appear as Troi in "Nepenthe," the next episode that will air. (See TV appearances in that link. Then see the episode list: Star Trek: Picard - Wikipedia )

tl;dr: different actress.
