My wifes new hobby...

For the money, one of the best new turntables currently on the market:

RT83 Reference Turntable with Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge - Natural Walnut | Fluance | Fluance

If sold separately, the Ortofon cartridge would alone cost $180.

There are dozens of top end turntables out there for the discerning buyer. I'm fine with my old Dual and Thorens tables, both refurbished within the last 3 years. Both play 78's. The 78 twelve record selection "Duets at Alhambra" featuring Django Reinhardt and Louis Armstrong is valued at $300k. On 5 of the selections, Armstrong plays piano. The 78 collection of Maria Semanova singing the opera Claudine, recent sold at separate auctions two copies each for $1.2 mil. You never know what is in the attic. Old blues 78's sell for upwards of $200 each.

Collectables only have monetary value if you can find a buyer willing to pay the price. Can't do a damn thing with my pet rock collection. :)

I have a pretty sizable record collection. Some are recordings that have not been converted to other formats. I have been going to the same record shop for 30+ years. Dont be afraid to experiment many thrift stores have selections of obscure recordings some are good other are worth the dollar for the laugh.
