MIDWAY Trailer

He cant lose when he gets on a chariot.

"They'll have to come through us." His last line in a movie, Tombstone. Sadly, you could see him struggling to remember his line. Tho we mock him at times, he did make some truly great movies. He appeared in more than a 100 movies. Quite a career.

I actually liked the old Midway movie- sure it had some PC melodrama, but it stuck close to the actual events every time Heston's character wasnt on screen. And I remember Ben Hur a lot because that was the only movie we as grandkids could watch on Christmas- my grandma said we could only watch religious movies during that day, and so we always chose it.

Six minutes that changed the war. 10:22-10:28 AM, 4 June 1942

To this day they have not been able to game up the result. The Japanese simply brought too much firepower and experience. American forces were unprepared and disorganized. Yet the result was a catastrophic defeat for the stronger Japanese fleet. The Japanese flagship, Akagi, was destroyed by only five attacking planes. Unthinkable.

John Ford's 18 minute documentary is excellent if you can find it. It contains some of the best live-action sequences of the whole war.

I saw Midway in the theater in the 70's in Sensurround! It was my favorite naval battle movie. The cast was great. They knew how to build suspense. They go overboard on CGI today. I realize that they don't have WWIi planes in supply like in the 70's for shows like Black Sheep Squadron, but it seems that movies lack acting, story, and believable action when CGI dominates the film.

The original Midway was tolerable if you could overlook some of the cut and past vintage film clips use ; Charlton Heston's character dying in the end when his WWII prop driven F4F Wildcat fighter crashed, but the film clip clearly showed a Grumman F9F-2 Panther jet....which would not even make its first flight until nearly 6 years later.

Granted, SFX of the time were limited...but, come on......George Lucas turned out Star Wars a year later.

The Japanese carriers had unarmored flight decks, and their firefighting was woefully flawed. Let's not forget that luck played a role too- their planes were in the process of being armed and loaded when our planes hit them- perfect timing. The sacrifice of the initial waves of torpedo bombers helped too since it took away most of their air cover.

Also, we cracked the Japanese codes, so the US Navy was waiting for them when they attacked Midway.

I'm surprised. There were many other religious movies: The Robe and Demetrious and the Gladiators, The Ten Commandments, St. Francis of Asissi, Joan of Arc, the stinker the Silver Chalice, A Wonderful Life, Oliver Twist, O'Henry's The Gift of the Magi, Debby Does Dallas, the last epiphanic, many others.

Yeah, but none of those has the brutal chariot race, or the whippings, or the tense naval battle, or the eternal theme of revenge- we grandkids chose Ben Hur because it was violent! ;)

I hope they don’t muck this up!

Looks awful, looks like it's another war movie that uses far too much guff and patriotism to ever be good.

Debbie Does Dallas?

One of the cool things about watching the original is seeing actors who would later become famous, such as Robert Ito and Pat Morita as Japanese naval officers, Tom Selleck as a marine and Erik Estrada as a pilot.

Luck played a factor is understating it. Three uncoordinated flights of planes, from two carriers, arrived from different directions, attacked and destroyed three of the four primary targets, all within the most vulnerable 15 minutes of the battle. It was like rolling triple sixes back-to-back.

Debbie Does Dallas?

LOL I failed to notice, probably because I was responding in two threads at once. My grandma owned a video store back in the 80's and we had the run of any movie we wanted. I got caught more than once pilfering the porno stash...

There are so many jokes that I can think of..............must resist, must resist....!
